Route Description for Heritage Walks-Marayur Village
The Heritage Walk Marayur Village hike begins from the Marayur sandalwood forest area where you’ll meet your local village guide, who will introduce the culture and life of the village, farming methods, festivals, and customs.
Start on the gentle trail on the forest fringes, which offers sightings of giant squirrels, barking deer, common macaque, and many species of birds and butterflies. Here, your guide will also explain further on the interesting native plants, both wild and cultivable.
Approach the first village where depending on the season, different ranges of farming activities like sawing, harvesting, and processing can be seen in the village. Traditional methods of making molasses sugar can be seen almost every day of the year. Stop here to observe the harvesting from one side of the farm and processing on the other side.
Both cash crops and essential crops are growing in the village and can be observed from the trail. The locals are very friendly and welcoming, always ready for a chat.
Depart the village and head to archeological sites perched on a small hillock called “the mount of the dead.” Like in other parts of the world, the dolmen of the mount overlooks the farmlands from east to west.
The typology of Megaliths applied by ancient people who constructed these magnificent structures uphold the site as the most important archeological studies of the area.
Continue around the path until you find yourself in the perfect position to view the massif of Anamudi Peak and the Palani Hill tract before you reach the end point.
