Route Description for Lake Augusta Trail
Lake Augusta is a very challenging hike, but it’s doable by those with plenty of fitness and preparation. Break it up into a short backpacking trip if it seems like too much or if you plan to climb Big Jim right behind the lake. This trail isn’t very busy, but you should be prepared to climb over and under lots of downed trees.
Begin from the trailhead. The first two miles of the hike are absolutely brutal and there’s no way around it. You’ll climb very, very steep switchbacks. If you can get past this first portion, you’re in for stellar views! The rest of the route to Lake Augusta is a bit undulating, with likely downed trees and possible overgrowth to contend with. Finish with a final climb up and over into the lake basin. Remember to keep right at the junction just before the ridge climb.
