Route Description for Moon Lake Trail
Skip through wildflower meadows and enchanting woodlands along the Moon Lake Trail. This stunning nature trail progresses through some of the most isolated sections of the Wind River Range, boasting the ideal wildlife viewing and birding opportunities. While the exposed terrain along the path offers great views, it warrants extreme conditions, so wear SPF and check the forecast before departure. Note that while a bear encounter is unlikely, we encourage hikers to carry a can of bear spray.
You will follow Moon Lake Road into the wilderness from the parking lot. Wandering through vast meadowlands, you will be granted picturesque views of the mountainscape in the south. While this trail follows what is likely an off-roading route, you will likely not run into vehicles as the terrain is quite rough and rugged. Keeping right at the first intersection, the Moon Lake Road will wind through dense tree stands of mixed pines. After some hiking, you will reach the highest point of the hike, which is located just below Union Peak.
From here, the route will plunge down to the shoreline of Moon Lake. Enjoy the scene of the shimmering lake encircled by evergreens and lush vegetation. Relax along the lakeshore, then head back the way you came to the trailhead.
