Great Knoutberry Hill Walk

The Great Knoutberry Hill Walk is a breathtaking adventure in the Yoprkshire Dales that will take you on a somewhat challenging climb uphill for scenic views. While out on the trail, you will work your way up the hillside and onto the ridge known as Widdale Fell, pushing your way up the dome-shaped summit of Great Knoutberry Hill for stunning views. This route will give you a bit of a leg burn, but the views are well worth it.

Route Description for Great Knoutberry Hill Walk
Featuring breathtaking views across the surrounding hills, moors, and valleys; the Great Knoutberry Walk is an amazing route that will allow you to appreciate the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. Setting out from the trailhead at The Sportsmans Inn, you will head southeast towards the village of Stone House, before beginning a steep climb uphill to the east.
Here, you will pass under the Arten Gill Viaduct and traverse the rugged terrain of the moor to reach the viewpoint atop Great Knoutberry Hill. After taking in the views, you will pass by Widdale Great Tarn and descend the hillside to the northwest along Coal Road. Reaching the valley floor in the village of Cowgill, you will head to the southeast and follow the River Dee on the return to the trailhead.
Getting to the Great Knoutberry Hill Walk Trailhead
To get to the trailhead for the Great Knoutberry Hill Walk from Hawes, head west for 10.5 km along Turfy Hill/B6255 and make a right onto Newby Head Road. Follow this for 4.5 km to arrive at the trailhead.
