Hike, boat, bike, and paddle through Argentine Patagonia
Patagonia is a haven for active travellers, with world-class hiking, paddling, climbing, and more on offer in all corners of the region. The Active Argentine Patagonia Tour is an action-packed experience in the far south of Patagonia and the renowned Los Glaciares National Park.
Combining hiking, ice hiking, paddling, and boat trips, there is not a single dull moment on this tour! Beginning at the “End of the World” in Ushuaia, you’ll listen to the chatter of the penguin colonies as you explore the far southern reaches of Argentina. Windswept coastlines give way to towering peaks in Los Glaciares National Park, where you’ll climb in crampons to excellent viewpoints over the massive Perito Moreno Glacier. Zip across lakes to remote trailheads, discovering an amphitheatre of glaciers not many travellers ever get to see. Paddle along rivers and through canals, experiencing Patagonia from the aquamarine waters. The Active Argentine Patagonia Tour packs every minute with thrilling activities, letting you experience Patagonia just as it should be experienced.
Your adventure begins in Ushuaia, a resort town far on the southern end of Argentina called the “End of the World.” This city is a starting point for many Antarctica cruises and is known for its nearby penguin colonies. Settle into your hotel and then spend the remainder of your day at your leisure.
Today you’ll be able to choose from two hikes in the area around Ushuaia. You can either take a trip into Tierra del Fuego National Park to hike and canoe or visit the far-flung Laguna Turquesa, wrapped in mountains. Whichever you choose, a gorgeous day is guaranteed!
Note: National Park with trekking and canoes does not operate on Saturdays.
In the morning, leave Ushuaia and drive to the Larsiphashaj River, where you’ll prepare your canoes. Start paddling, passing through the Beagle Channel. Mountains and windswept hills surround you as you canoe to Estancia Harberton.
You’ll transfer to a boat to cruise to a penguin colony, where you’ll be able to observe these cute little animals on their traditional breeding grounds. The boat then takes you to Gable Island, where you’ll have lunch and take a scenic walk near the shoreline.
Note: Gable Island with canoes operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The morning and afternoon today can be spent as you please prior to leaving for a short flight to El Calafate. Walk the windy shore, check out a local restaurant, or spend some time observing the penguins.
Waking up in El Calafate, prepare for a day in nearby Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the premier national parks of Patagonia. Beginning in Bahia Bajo las Sombras, you’ll cruise to Rico Branch. From here, begin a short hike assisted by crampons to the Perito Moreno Glacier, the most photographed glacier in the entire park. This mighty ice sheet is 257 square kilometres large and the front walls reach up to 60 metres above the lake’s surface!
Have lunch, then walk back to your starting point, admiring the glacier from another perspective.
After breakfast, you’ll be driven to Roca Lake. Sailing to Sur Branch, you’ll reach a trailhead where few people have access. Hike to Frias Lake, cross over the lake in a zodiac, and then continue hiking along a riverbed. Your destination is Anfiteatro de los Glaciares, where you’ll have an amphitheatre-like view of the Grande, Cubo, and Dickson glaciers. You’ll want your camera handy!
Return on the same route you came on, enjoying the utter tranquillity of this quiet corner of Patagonia.
Spend the morning kayaking in the Santa Cruz River. If you’d prefer, you can hike or bike in the area.
After too many once-in-a-lifetime sights to count on your active adventure in Patagonia, it’s time to depart. You’ll be dropped off at the airport in El Calafate. Adios!

I’ve been using 10Adventures route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10Adventures made that happen.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
