The Alpujarras Mountain Trek is a self-guided hiking experience that will immerse you in the mesmerizing Mediterranean landscapes that unfold at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Each day of the tour brings a new thrilling challenge as you trek surrounded by fragrant orchards and groves, with towering snowy peaks as your majestic backdrop.

Setting out from Capileira (1,436m/4,711ft), you’ll enjoy daily hikes through spectacular mountainous landscapes and gorgeous, white-washed villages. Discover the beauty of the Río Poqueira Valley as you hike through its charming villages of Bubion and Pampaniera. Bask in the glorious scenery of the Trevélez River Valley, reaching the town of Trevélez on foot. Here, you can treat yourself to its famous “jamón serrano” (cured ham), an irresistible post-hike snack. Explore the ruins of a 13th-century Moorish silk washing house nestled in the Río Grande Valley, getting a taste for the region’s fascinating history.

Alpujarras Mountain Trek

Day 1 Arrival

Your start point on the Alpujarras Mountain Trek is the site of a former Moorish settlement in the lovely village of Capileira.

Check into your hotel and, if time permits, set out to explore the village’s collection of narrow lanes, weaving your way alongside the white-washed houses, picturesque squares, and fountains!

Day 2 Explore the Río Poqueira Valley

Your first day of hiking in the Alpujarras has you setting out on a scenic loop in the Río Poqueira Valley. From Capileira, you’ll walk alongside the remains of ancient farmhouses and sprawling fields as you make your way to Pampaneira, via Bubion.

As you explore the villages of the Río Poqueira Valley, the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada will accompany you as an ever-present backdrop.

The vibrant village of Pampaneira is full of colour and art! Check out its many local arts & crafts shops and cute cafes before completing the loop back to Capileira.

Day 3 Hike Ancient Paths to Pórtugos

Today you’ll navigate the ancient paths that once linked the Poqueira Valley to the small villages of the lower Alpujarras.

The trail that guides you through several picturesque white-washed villages boasts a myriad of stunning scenery, from holm oak forest to pine tree plantations and later irrigated fields as you approach the Taha de Pitres (an ancient water council center).

Day 5 Welcome to the Trevélez Valley

Today, as you set out into the beautiful Trevélez Valley, your trail, flanked by ancient holm oaks and pastoral farmland, leads you through the tiny mountain villages of the Sierra Nevada and finally to the town of Trevélez.

Carved into the eastern slopes of the magnificent Mulhacén Peak (3479m/11,414ft), you'll have an evening to explore the picturesque town and its three unique neighbourhoods. Be sure to seek out a spot to enjoy the town's famous jamón serrano.

Day 6 Choice of Walks

Trevélez and the surrounding area are full of breathtaking landscapes. Today you’ll choose from three walks, all setting out from Trevélez.

Hike a scenic loop through the beautiful countryside that surrounds Trevélez

Hike along part of the Camino de Granada pilgrim’s trail.

Day 7 Climb to El Portichuelo

You’ll say farewell to Trevélez this morning as you enjoy a pleasant route through enchanting woods. The final section grants you fantastic views of the African continent (on clear days) as you reach El Portichuelo.

Arrive in Bérchules, where you’ll unwind at your homey accommodations, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.

Day 8 Hike in the Río Grande Valley

If your departure time permits a final hike, enjoy a gorgeous route along the Río Grande Valley this morning! Here, you’ll trace an irrigation channel and stumble across the ruins of a 13th-century Moorish silk washing house, providing you with a glimpse into the fascinating history of the area and its once-booming textile industry.

This afternoon, your Alpujarras Mountain Trek comes to an end. Catch a bus to Granada to depart. Adiós!

The nearest airports are Málaga Airport (AGP) and Federico Garcia Lorca Granada Airport (GRX). From Málaga Airport (AGP), take a bus, train, or taxi to Málaga city center. From the city center, take a bus to Granada; travel time is approximately 2 hours. From Granada you can take a bus (ALSA) to Capileira; travel time is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. From Granada Airport (GRX), first take a bus to Granada city center, then take a bus to Orgiva. From Orgiva take a taxi to Capileira. Bus tickets can be booked in advance during the booking process. Alternatively, you can arrange your own private transport from your arrival airport to your start point in Capileira.

Where does the Alpujarras Mountain Trek end?

The trek ends in Bérchules. From Bérchules there are direct buses to Granada twice daily, and travel time is approximately 3.5 hours. If flying out of Málaga Airport (AGP), there is a direct bus from Granada, which takes approximately 2.5 hours. If flying out of Granada Airport (GRX), you can take public transport to get from Granada city center to the airport. Alternatively, you can arrange your own private transfer to your departure airport in advance.
