Discover the beautiful island of Crete on this family-friendly walking holiday
This 8-day self-guided walking holiday is the perfect way for you to explore Crete with your family. The itinerary includes lots of free time and flexibility, giving you the option to choose which walks you want to do and when you want to do them.
Immerse yourself in Greek culture as you get to know the seaside town of Chora Sfakion, where you’ll stay for the entire tour. Take a different walk each day that explore the island’s unique landscapes. Options include a quiet stroll through the Askifou plain, an exploration of Imbros and Samaria gorges, and a visit to the remote village of Loutro. You can explore at your own pace and modify the itinerary to suit your family’s holiday dreams. Make lasting memories on the Crete Family Walking Tour!
When you arrive at the Chania airport, a shuttle will be waiting to drive you to Chora Sfakion. The drive to this little town is about an hour and a half. You’ll spend the duration of your trip at this seaside location with easy access to other villages, restaurants, and beautiful beaches.
This tour includes a lot of free time for your family to explore, which you can fill with as many or as few activities as you like. Below, you’ll find the list of the five recommended walks that you can complete in whichever order you choose.
Walk 1 – Discover the Askifou Plain
Distance: 2 hours, 7 km, 150m of ascent, 125m of descent
Take a taxi or public transit to Askifou, where you’ll begin your walk. This walk is on quiet roads and will take you to the villages of Kares and Imbros. This easy walk explores rural farmlands, and you have the chance to stop at the small war museum in Kares.
Walk 2 – Explore the Imbros Gorge
Distance: 4 hours, 12.5 km, 350m of ascent, 1100m of descent
You’ll need to take a taxi or bus to Imbros to begin this walk. You’ll walk through the inspiring Imbros Gorge and to the village of Komitades. There are lovely tavernas abound here if you want to stop for a meal before taking a taxi or walking back to Chora Sfakion.
Walk 3 – Ferry and Samaria Gorge
Distance: 3 hours, 7.2km, 375m of ascent, 375m of descent
To start this walk, you’ll take the ferry to Agia Roumeli. You’ll walk uphill from the village to the Samaria gorge. Walk as far as you’d like or turn around at the “Portes,” which is the gorge’s narrowest point. The last ferry returns at 5:30 pm, so make sure you’re back in time to make the hour-long boat ride back to Chora Sfakion.
Walk 4 – Visit Chania
It’s about an hour bus ride to Chania, but you’ll be glad to visit this historic town. This ancient Venetian port has a lighthouse, the Firkas Fortress, and museums for you to explore. Or you can simply wander the pedestrian streets and enjoy a nice meal at a local taverna.
Walk 5 – Walk the Coast to Loutro
You can choose what route you’d like to take today depending on how far you’d like to walk. You can follow the coast or take the longer route through the Ilingas Gorge that passes through the village of Anopolis. Loutro, your seaside destination, is only accessible by boat or on foot. Explore this charming village and the secluded bay and then walk or take the ferry back to Chora Sfakion. Even if you decide to take the ferry both ways, Loutro is worth the visit.
Your family walking tour has come to an end. Once you’re packed, a transfer will be waiting to take you to Chania airport to check-in for your flight.

I’ve been using 10Adventures route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10Adventures made that happen.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

My wife Sarah and I had a great experience booking our 7-day cycling trip through Portugal via 10Adventures. The communication between us and Nadine leading up the trip was top-notch!

Communicating with 10Adventures feels like talking with a family-run business. I love to explore and travel, and exploring with the comfort of knowing I can talk to the team at 10Adventures with almost immediate feedback helps to ease any stress that comes with adventuring!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.

Wow! I am so happy with the experience I had with booking through 10Adventures for my tour in Italy! I worked with Nadine and she was super easy-going and helpful when it came to tweaking the itinerary provided on the website. 10/10 would book through 10Adventures again.
