Ride from the mountains in Italy to the lakes in Austria
Get the best of the Italian and Austrian Alps on this laid-back cycling tour! Starting in Italy, you’ll ride along the well-known Drau/Drava cycle path from the Dolomites to the lake-filled province of Carinthia, Austria. Discover small hamlets and large cities, each as charming as the last. Admire no shortage of natural scenery- rivers, colourful peaks, lakes, and countryside abound. At booking, you can either rent a standard bike or an e-bike to make the ride as easy as you like.
For anyone curious about the fascinating culture in this area, this tour will deliver some answers. The border proximity means that each town and city shares influences from the surrounding countries, which created a mish-mash of flavours in food and drink and unique atmosphere to immerse yourself in. Enjoy comfortable hotels each night, then take your pick of the many restaurants for lunch and dinner. The Italian and Austrian Alps Bike Tour is definitely worth it!
If you can, try to arrive in Hochpusteral as early as possible—there is so much to see and do here before your cycling adventure starts. Take a walk to the nearby lake, or explore the adventure park that has a rope course.
Settle into your hotel and prepare to begin your adventure tomorrow.
After breakfast, you’ll start riding to the Drau cycle path (the Drava cycle path). Begin the day with a ride to San Candido, a beautiful town nestled between mountains. Soon after, you’ll cross the border and continue along the bike path into Austria and descend to your final destination, Lienz. Here, you can explore this sunny town built next to the Drau river with a charming Old Town and impressive mountain backdrop.
Fill up on breakfast before exploring the wonders in Lienz, like the outdoor museum and swimming pool. You’ll then meet up with the cycle path again for a nice ride along the Drau River on a once essential Roman trading route.
Arrive in Berg im Drautal with time to wander the centre and get some dinner before bed.
Your ride today consists of many charming villages along the Drau River. After breakfast, you’ll ride into idyllic landscapes and iconic villages in the Austrian Alps. If you have the energy, take a detour to Lake Millstättersee for a refreshing swim or quick rest.
Continuing from the lake, you’ll soon see Spittal an der Drau in view, where you’ll stop for the night. This city is famous for its renaissance castles.
After a lovely breakfast, you’ll continue riding through Carinthia province, an iconic place with the Alps as a constant backdrop, several lakes dotting the landscape, and renaissance architecture throughout the villages and cities. The journey takes you to Villach, the second-largest city in this province.
Fill up on breakfast and get ready for a lovely circuit to a nearby lake. Following the Seebach River to leave town, you’ll soon see Landskron Castle come into view—a beautiful ornate building amid pastoral landscapes.
Soon after, Lake Ossiach will appear like an oasis, sitting amid immense peaks. It’s undeniably inviting, and you can definitely stop for a swim. Make a loop and return to Villach for the night.
Wake up for your last awesome day of biking. Today’s route has minimal elevation gain and leads right to the provincial capital of Carinthia, Klagenfurt. Before you reach the city, you can take an extended break at the biggest lake in Carinthia, Lake Wörthersee.
Enjoy your final night in the dreamy town of Klagenfurt.
Once you have your final breakfast and check out, your tour comes to an end. Organize your own transportation to the next part of your journey.

I’ve been using 10A route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10A made that happen.
I was going through a tough time and really needed a getaway so I decided to book a tour through 10Adventures. My trip to Peru changed my life in so many positive and eye-opening ways. I am so thankful for the kind, empathetic team at 10Adventures.
I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!
Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!
My wife Sarah and I had a great experience booking our 7-day cycling trip through Portugal via 10Adventures. The communication between us and Nadine leading up the trip was top-notch!
Communicating with 10Adventures feels like talking with a family-run business. I love to explore and travel, and exploring with the comfort of knowing I can talk to the team at 10Adventures with almost immediate feedback helps to ease any stress that comes with adventuring!
Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.
I tend to have a lot of questions before travelling and was so happy to find that the team at 10Adventures responded to every single one of my inquiries in a timely fashion. I was never left waiting and waiting for a response. This was much appreciated!
I have horrible dietary issues making it super hard to book a pre-planned trip sometimes, but the communication through 10Adventures helped me navigate this situation! I am so grateful for all of their help. I cant wait to book with them again!
I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!
I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
Wow! I am so happy with the experience I had with booking through 10Adventures for my tour in Italy! I worked with Nadine and she was super easy-going and helpful when it came to tweaking the itinerary provided on the website. 10/10 would book through 10Adventures again.
