Discover Corfu - one of Greece’s most beautiful Ionian Islands on foot
Walking on the Greek Island of Corfu means walking in a mesmerizing world painted in rich greens and deep blues. On the 8-Day Self-Guided Corfu Trail Hiking Tour, you’ll be invited to experience this colourful world for yourself as you walk in a land where the lush green mountains and spectacular blue sea are never far out of sight.
This self-guided walking holiday invites you to walk the highlights of the Corfu Trail; a trail on this Ionian Island in Greece, home to spectacular natural beauty. You will also wander through the old town of Corfu with its glorious past still very much alive in its maze of streets lined with alfresco cafes and markets and its Byzantine buildings. Though the island of Corfu is a well-known tourism destination, the inland of Corfu remains very authentic and picturesque, featuring Venetian architecture, white-sand beaches, clear blue waters and lush vegetation.
You will start with a walk along the wetlands of Lake Koryssion following the yellow marks of the Corfu Trail, and then cross the island from the west to the east coast. A circular walk from Benitses will take you along the Benitses Aqueduct, a remarkable irrigation system from the 19th century. Later, you’ll reach the summit of Agii Deka during a long walk following the Corfu Trail again. After a day in the Unesco town of Corfu, you will head north and explore two walks in the northern section of the Corfu Trail: from Rekini across the Pantokrator until the finale at Agios Spyridonas.
Discover this island jewel of Greece for yourself on the Corfu Trail Hiking Tour Highlights!
Arrive at Corfu Airport and transfer to your hotel, catching your first glimpses of the island as you make your way to the village of Messonghi located on the east coast of Corfu. Just 19km south of Corfu town, Messonghi is a quiet former fishing village with a lovely sandy beach and relaxed atmosphere.
Rise ready to take on your first day of hiking on the island as you set out on a transfer to the trailhead on Issos Beach. Arriving on the western side of Corfu, you’ll be met by views of the stunning Korission Lagoon. The coastal area that you’ll walk today is a haven for wildlife. You’ll likely spot lots of Juniper, and in the spring and autumn months in particular, many different species of birds such as egrets and kingfishers. Keep your eyes peeled for terrapins as well in the saltwater lake!
From the lake you’ll head back to the east coast via Chlomatiana as you make your way uphill, alongside olive groves and vineyards. In Chlomatiana there is a lovely restaurant called ‘Archontiko’ where you can enjoy mouth-watering seafood while enjoying terrific views out over the sea. Finally, you’ll wrap up the day with a pleasant descent through olive groves back to Messonghi.
From Messonghi this morning you’ll set out on an adventure to take the public bus to the coastal town of Benitses (20 minutes). From here you’ll ascend through a cool, shady forested area before continuing alongside historic irrigation waterworks built by the British and dating to the 19th century.
Through lush green olive groves you’ll ascend to the village of Agioi Deka where you can top up your water bottle with the fresh spring water that flows freely here. Then, via rural country roads, you’ll descend to Pikantika and Achilleio, two picturesque villages well worth stopping in. Continue via a beautiful, romantic trail that leads you to the lovely viewpoint at the church of Agia Kyriaki before heading on a final downhill stretch through dense forest to return to Benitses.
Relax in one of the numerous cafes in the old town square here before taking the bus back to Messonghi to return to your hotel.
Transfer to Stroggili this morning with your sights set on a beautiful section of the famous Corfu Trail. Set out on a pleasant footpath up onto the slopes of Agioi Deka, the second highest peak of Corfu (676m). You’ll continue to follow historic mule tracks past traditional mountain villages and a beautiful monastery today.
Once you reach Sinarades you can catch a bus to Corfu Town to reach your next hotel which located in the charming old town, a listed world heritage site.
A day in Corfu town gives you the opportunity to fully enjoy this historic city on foot! You can explore picturesque paths and colourful, charming alleys all while admiring the local architecture, highly influenced by the Venetians. Be sure to visit the awe-inspiring 16th-century fortress as well as the local archaeological museum today and enjoy the wealth of excellent dining opportunities found here.
From your hotel in Corfu town you will be transferred to Rekini this morning where you’ll begin your walk along the foot of the Pantokrator Mountains in Northern Corfu. Following the Corfu Trail once more, you walk through an area of Corfu that time seems to have forgotten. Quiet cobbled trails, sleepy villages like Sokraki, famous for its gingerbeer, you’ll discover rural Corfu at its very best today!
Those walking in spring will be spoilt by the display of orchids on the slopes of Mount Pantokrator. The walk ends in Spartyllas, where there are several cafés to enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine, which you can sip on while staring out at the deep blue sea and Albania on the horizon. From Spartyllas a transfer will pick you up and take you to Barbati where you’ll find your next hotel.
Today’s thrilling finale takes you to the saddle of the Pantokrator Mountain where you’ll unearth stunning views of the nearby Albanian mountains. You start at 350m altitude and ascend via old mule tracks and dirt roads to a high saddle, weaving your way through mountain villages along the way.
Worth mentioning is the village of Mengoulas, an abandoned village with ruined stone buildings as well as the Byzantine village of Old Perithia.
Enjoy a terrific lunch in Old Perithia before making the final descent to the coast via a track that runs through a green valley and charming forest. The very last section along wetlands near the coast is quite spectacular as you press on to Agios Spyridon on Corfu’s northern coast—the very end of the Corfu Trail. From here you will be transferred back to Barbati.

I’ve been using 10A route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10A made that happen.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
