Experience the natural beauty of Pakistan on this 9-day guided overland adventure
The Hunza Valley is widely considered to be among the most scenic and beautiful regions of the world. It was the inspiration for paradise Shangri La in the book Lost Horizon by James Hilton, and once you have witnessed its wonders you’ll understand why. This tour takes you through incredible mountain scenery on the world-renowned Karakorum Highway and up to overlook points such as the Babusar Pass, the Khunejrab Pass, and the Duikar Top. You’ll also explore lush river valleys and enjoy boating or jet-skiing on the sparkling blue waters of Attabad Lake. There will be so much beauty surrounding you that you may find it hard to take it all in.
You’ll also have the chance to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, as you stay in local hotels in small towns and have the opportunity to shop in the markets and sample traditional local food. Experience the region fully through its history and culture, and by interacting with the Hunzakut people. This guided Hunza Valley Overland tour is a truly unforgettable experience.
Welcome to Islamabad, Pakistan! Meet your guide and/or group leader at the airport and head to your hotel for an introduction and tour briefing. Spend the evening sightseeing in the capital city of Islamabad and enjoy a fantastic dinner with an even better view at the Monal Restaurant in Margalla Hills. Spend a comfortable night in the hotel
Get an early start today for the long ride to Chilas. Ride comfortably in an air-conditioned van or coach along the amazing Karakorum Highway. Take in the spectacular scenery as you follow the Indus River through steep gorges all the way to Chilas. Don’t miss the views as you cross the Babusar Pass (4,173 m / 13,691 ft), which is quite an experience. If the Babusar Pass is not safe to cross, you will get to Chilas via the Naran Valley which follows the Kunhar River through lush green valleys and also offers majestic mountain scenery. When you arrive in Chilas, you’ll notice that though it is on the banks of the Indus River, it is a dry, barren place. Spend the night in a comfortable hotel and enjoy the amazing panoramic vistas from Chilas.
Continue on the Karakorum Highway from Chilas to Karimabad in the Hunza Valley. You’ll understand why this amazing road is often referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World. You’ll see some of the most incredible mountain scenery in the world, including clear views of Nanga Parbat (8,126 m / 26,660 ft) and Rakaposhi (7,788 m / 25,551 ft), as well as the point where the mighty Karakorum, Hindu Kush, and Himalaya mountain ranges meet. After arriving in Karimabad, visit a local bazaar and experience the local hospitality.
Another early morning today as you continue along the Karakorum Highway toward the Khunjerab Pass (4,693 m / 15,397 ft). Along the way, you’ll get a preview of the brilliantly blue Attabad Lake, where you will get to spend more time tomorrow. This relatively new lake was formed as a result of a catastrophic landslide in 2010 that dammed the Hunza River about 10 km upstream from Karimabad. Take in more spectacular sights during the journey, such as the hanging Passu Glacier and the massive Batura Glacier, which is 57 km long and ranks among the world’s longest non-polar glaciers. You will also see the majestic Passu Cones, also known as Tupopdan (6,106 m / 20,033 ft). As the road takes you through the lovely towns of Gulmit and Sost, you will be warmly welcomed by the local townspeople. Finally, you’ll arrive at the Khunjerab Pass, the highest point on the Karakorum Highway, which also marks the border between Pakistan and China. Spend a wonderful afternoon here, then travel to Passu to spend the night in a hotel with more incredible views of the Passu Glacier and the Passu Cones.
Today you’ll enjoy the morning visit to Passu Suspension bridge and drive to Attaabad Lake to enjoy this beautiful location by boating or jet-skiing.
Enjoy the morning visit to Hopper Glacier, Hopper valley and the afternoon visit to Baltit and Altit Fort. In the evening, you’ll be taken to Duiker valley and a beautiful viewpoint to see the sunset and sunrise over the beautiful mountains in the surroundings of Hunza.
Today is a long day. You’ll enjoy a drive back to Naran via Babusar Pass 4173 or via Karakorum highway to Besham. Even though the distance is long (355km), the surrounding views are definitely worth the drive regardless of the road taken!
Today you’ll return to Islamabad. Visit the Taxila Museum along the route!
Sadly, your time on the Hunza Valley overland tour has come to an end. After breakfast, your group leader and/or guide will assist you in your transfer to the Islamabad airport for your return flight.

I’ve been using 10Adventures route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10Adventures made that happen.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

My wife Sarah and I had a great experience booking our 7-day cycling trip through Portugal via 10Adventures. The communication between us and Nadine leading up the trip was top-notch!

Communicating with 10Adventures feels like talking with a family-run business. I love to explore and travel, and exploring with the comfort of knowing I can talk to the team at 10Adventures with almost immediate feedback helps to ease any stress that comes with adventuring!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
