Overview

Walk one of Japan’s most scenic coastal routes on this Michinoku Coastal Trail hiking tour, following dramatic sections of the Sanriku Coast from Jodogahama toward Hachinohe. This 10-day self-guided journey combines rugged sea cliffs, quiet fishing villages, forested headlands, ocean viewpoints, and traditional hot spring stays along Japan’s northeastern Pacific coastline.

This immersive journey along Japan’s Michinoku Coastal Trail traces some of the most striking and meaningful sections of the Sanriku Coast, a region where dramatic natural beauty, quiet fishing communities, and powerful stories of resilience come together. After arriving in Tokyo, you’ll head north to begin walking from the ethereal coves and white rock formations of Jodogahama, following coastal paths past Shiofukiana’s sea cave, Tochinai Beach, the tsunami-scarred Taro Kanko Hotel, and the striking sea stacks of Sannoiwa. The route continues along the remote Sawajiri Coast, the rugged Moshi Coast, and fossil-rich shorelines, before climbing towards the unforgettable “Stairway to the Sky” and the sweeping clifftop panoramas of Kitayamazaki Lookout. Further north, you’ll explore Kurosaki-so, Nedari-hama, Fudai, and Okuki to Same, with sections linked by the scenic Sanriku Railway, giving you a rich and varied experience of ocean views, forested headlands, hidden beaches, local history, and traditional coastal life. Blending wild scenery, cultural depth, moving memorial sites, warm regional hospitality, and a rare chance to experience one of Japan’s lesser-known long-distance trails, this itinerary offers a deeply rewarding adventure far beyond the country’s more familiar travel routes.

Designed for travellers who enjoy moderate coastal hiking, this tour balances active days on the trail with comfortable accommodation, regional hospitality, and relaxing onsen stays. After completing the final walking section near Hachinohe, you return to Tokyo by Shinkansen, ending the journey with a memorable look at one of Japan’s most beautiful and lesser-known long-distance hiking routes.
