As you continue trekking, the forest will begin to open as you cross the tree line and the landscape changes to a paramo area. Day 4 Trek to the Summit of Paramillo del Quindio

Hit the trail early today for a long but rewarding day trekking to the summit of Paramillo del Quindio. As you leave Berlin Farm, begin by climbing through El Agrado valley up to La Angustia pass (4,193 m/13,757’), which is also the border between the state of Risaralda and the state of Quindio.

After crossing the pass, descend gently into the valley, then cross to the northern side to climb again to the Humedales de Quindio wetland area (4,193 m/13,757’). These wetlands are the source of the Quindio River, which provides water to many lower regions. Stop here to rest and eat lunch, then begin your climb to the summit of El Paramillo del Quindio, an extinct volcano which is the highest point in the state of Quindio. Follow the trail across the slippery scree up to the ridge called El Caballete (The Easel). Continue climbing along the strikingly red sand ridge which leads to the peak at 4,745 m (15,568’). From here, you can see nearly all of Los Nevados National Park, as well as several neighboring volcanoes, including Nevado Santa Isabel (4,965 m/16,289’), Nevado del Tolima (5,221 m/17,129’), and Nevado del Ruiz (5,321 m/17,457’).
