Explore Umbria’s enchanting landscapes peppered with medieval tales on foot
Embroidered with fascinating tales, ancient medieval architectural wonders, and local delicacies like wine, cheese, and truffles, this self-guided pilgrimage along the Saint Francis Way not only takes you through a pinnacle point in spiritual history but it introduces you to Italy’s quintessential cultural greats in a unique, inspiring way.
Travel past villages—steeped in history—by chapels, hermitages, and rolling landscapes covered by orchards, fields of olives, and woodland as you walk the same path trail blazed by Francis of Assisi, a saint who swapped luxury for Christianity after he heard God ask him to revel in poverty and rebuild the church. This six-day tour encompasses the rich culture of Umbria, a region in Italy, with a spiritual twist.
Start your pilgrimage along Saint Francis Way in Città di Castello, which encompasses an array of architectural wonders: Palazzo del Podestà, Cathedral of San Florido. Do find time to enjoy a dish of white truffle before you go.
After a fulfilling breakfast, take a quick transfer from Città di Castello to Campanile, where your walking journey begins. Meander through the hushed woods before reaching Pietralunga, a village layered with history and narrow roads. Opt to get dropped off a little further along the path if you want to walk less than 15 km.
Enjoy breakfast before lacing up your walking shoes for another day where history and landscapes beautifully collide to form a remarkable 18 km trek. Pass by the abbey of San Benedetto, which harks back to the 12th century. At the end of your walk, you will take a taxi to Gubbio. Admire the preserved medieval architecture layering the slopes of this town. Spend the night at your hotel in Gubbio.
Get ready for the longest trek of this self-guided tour. This 23 km journey will take you along the hills, offering magnificent views as you go. Eventually, you’ll encounter Mt. Sibillini— these snow-capped peaks are members of the Apennines mountain range. Continue on through the lush, rolling valley of Sentiero Francescano before stopping in Valfabbrica, a former fortress during the Middle Ages, for the night. Marvel at the remnants of ruins dotting this commune.
Pass through and by a myriad of landscapes and monuments today: woods, fields, quaint country homes, and churches. Admire the snow-swept peaks standing like a faded sketch in the background. Amid the rolling hills, sits your final destination: Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis. Admire the panoramic vistas sprawling in the valley below as well as the aesthetically pleasing architecture dotting this town, such as the Basilica of St. Francis.
The tour ends after breakfast.

I’ve been using 10A route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10A made that happen.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
