Imagine biking in the glorious Alps in Austria and northern Italy and then ending up on the Adriatic Coast! That’s what you’ll do on this tour. For 8 days, you’ll ride a well-planned route and stay each night in a new town or city, each with a palpable charm and history. You’ll be challenged on some days as you have quite a distance to cover- 355–400km! The ever-changing scenery will be enough motivation to hop back on your bike.

Some routes will be challenging as you will ride up to 90km in one stretch but it’s well worth the effort: you’ll explore the countless lovely mountain towns along your route, appreciate the beautiful architecture and observe the local culture tucked away in the stunning Alps.

Day 1 Arrive in Salzburg

Start the tour in Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart and a truly Baroque city. Depending on when you arrive, spend the evening meandering the cobbled streets in the Old Town before heading to bed.

Day 2 Bike to St. Johann

Time to go! Your luggage will be transferred for you so you can ride unencumbered during the tour. Leaving Salzburg behind, the mountains will soon appear on the horizon. Enjoy a pleasant ride along the Salzach River, then continue to a village tucked in the green mountains. You’re in nature now!

You’ll be wowed by an impressive waterfall where you can stop for a quick splash before ascending to St. Johann, a recreation town with a ski resort.

Day 3 Bike Gastein Valley and Train to Mallnitz

After breakfast, ride along an undulating path through the tranquil Gastein Valley, where you’ll start recognizing quintessential Alps scenery. Mountains surround you as you cruise alongside a river, eventually reaching the Gastein Waterfall—a locale that has inspired artists for years.

The afternoon brings a short break from riding when you hop on a train in Böckstein to shorten the trip to Mölltal/Mallnitz. At the local station, you’ll descend into town to find your hotel for the night.

Day 4 Ride the Countryside to Villach

Get a big breakfast in you for a long ride today. The rivers don’t stop flowing in Austria, and you’ll continue alongside another one today, the Möll River, which cuts through forested mountains.

You’ll pass by Spittal, known for its remarkable castle, then pedal into Carinthia province, which is a lake lover’s dream. Arrive in Villach, and if you have time, ride to the nearest lake for an evening swim.

Day 5 Cross the Italian Border

Enjoy your final breakfast in Austria because you’re headed for Italy today. Cycling along a river (yes, another one!), you’ll soon enter Italy close to the three-nation corner of Austria, Italy, and Slovenia, countries that all share the Alps. Ride through a vast valley of lush vegetation, inhaling cool mountain air as you ride into Italy.

To shorten today’s trip, you’re welcome to take a train for a section (on your own dime), or you can ride the whole way. Either way, you’ll end up in Moggio Udinese, Tolmezzo, or Venzone (depending on availability) for the night.

Day 6 Cycle through the Alps to Udine

Waking up in a lovely Italian village and having breakfast will set the tone for the day. Depart your hotel and ride through the Alps, stopping in your choice of hamlets to refuel with as many espressos as you can handle.

In the afternoon, you’ll pedal through a vineyard area—it’s highly recommended that you stop and have a taste! Stroll into Udine for the night, a stunning town of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, with a piazza awaiting your arrival tomorrow morning for an espresso.

Day 7 Reach Grado on the Adriatic Sea

Find a sunny spot in the piazza for an early morning coffee, then hop on the bike for your last full day. As you leave the Alps behind, the landscapes will start to flatten as you ride along canals and marshlands. Grado, a historic fishing village on the coast, is your final destination. You’ll arrive with plenty of time to enjoy a relaxing couple of hours on the beach—a stark contrast from your Alp exploration over the last week.

Celebrate your accomplishments with some local food and wine and hit the pillow.
