Itinerary for Self-Guided Bulgaria Summits Trek
Arrive and Transfer to Goverdartsi
Arrive in Sofia, where you’ll be met at the airport for a 2-hour transfer to the village of Govedartsi, set at the foot of the impressive Rila Mountains. Settle into a welcoming family-run hotel before enjoying a traditional dinner and overnight stay.
Mount Musala Summit Trek
After breakfast, take a short 20-minute transfer to the gondola station in Borovets Ski Resort. A scenic 35-minute gondola ride leads to the trailhead for Mount Musala (2,926 m), the highest peak in Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula. From here, set out on a rewarding round-trip hike to the summit, where sweeping mountain views make the climb well worth the effort. After completing the 6-hour ascent and descent, return by gondola and transfer back to the hotel in Govedartsi.
Trekking in Northwest Rila -- Mount Malyovitsa Summit Trek
Fuel up with a delicious breakfast before taking a short 20-minute transfer to the starting point of today’s hike in the spectacular Northwest Rila, one of the most beautiful and dramatic areas of the mountain range. The trail leads through striking alpine scenery, passing glacial lakes and rugged mountain landscapes on the way to the summit of Mount Malyovitsa (2,729 m), a true symbol of Bulgarian mountaineering. After taking in the views from the top, descend through the scenic Malyovitsa Valley before returning to the hotel in Govedartsi.
Hike Forests and Valleys to Scary Lake
Today begins with a return to the Malyovitsa Valley, following a different trail into another spectacular corner of the Rila Mountains. The route leads through forests and scenic valleys to the famous Scary Lake, where dramatic views of rocky, vertical peaks create an unforgettable backdrop. In the afternoon, descend via the Camel Lakes, one of the most impressive areas of the Rila range, before completing the round-trip hike back at the starting point. Your day in the mountains concludes with a short transfer back to the hotel in Govedartsi for a final dinner and overnight stay.
Transfer to Bankso and Explore
Today offers a more relaxed change of pace, beginning with a 2.5-hour transfer to Bansko at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. Settle into a welcoming family-run hotel in the heart of the Old Town, with time to explore the area or enjoy a short optional walk nearby. After getting acquainted with Bulgaria’s other great mountain range, enjoy a traditional dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Mt. Vihren Summit Trek
After breakfast, set out for one of the most legendary treks in the Pirin Mountains: the ascent of Mount Vihren. A short 15-minute transfer leads to Bunderitsa Hut, where the trail begins across a strikingly different landscape of jagged rock, steep slopes, and rugged alpine terrain. The final section of the ascent includes some easy scrambling, secured with a chain, before reaching this spectacular summit and its sweeping mountain views. Descend by the easier southern route to Vihren Hut, where the hike ends after approximately 6 hours on the trail. A short transfer returns to the hotel in Bansko, with dinner left open this evening to enjoy one of the town’s many traditional taverns.
Polezhan Summit Trek
A short transfer brings you above the town of Dobrinishte to Gotse Delchev Hut, where a chairlift carries you up to Bezbog Hut and the start of today’s hike. From here, set out toward Polezhan Summit (2,851 m), the fifth-highest peak in the Pirin Mountains and one of the region’s most rewarding viewpoints. The route follows the classic northeast ridge, a steady and accessible trail with a steeper final 20-minute push to the summit. From the top, enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas in Pirin, with views over 17 glacial lakes, including the impressive Popovo Lake. Descend by the same route and take the chairlift back down before returning by transfer to the hotel in Bansko for dinner and overnight.
End of Your Trek
Enjoy one last breakfast in Bankso this morning before transferring to Sofia for departure.
