Walk amid the medieval remnants and charming villages spanning Umbria's countryside
Traverse Umbria, "the green heart of Italy," where mouthwatering local cuisine and medieval remnants dot the lush landscape. While this seven-day self-guided tour from Assisi to Spoleto encompasses Italy's famed quirks, it also provides a meaningful, thought-provoking spiritual twist.
On this walking tour, you'll meander across the faded footprints of St. Francis. In the 12th century, he abandoned materialistic luxuries when God's voice echoed in his mind. This resulted in living in poverty and a massive spiritual awakening. St. Francis walked this route, sharing his newfound wisdom to the villagers. And now you'll have the chance to walk the same path on this tour.
Begin your journey in Assisi, which is situated on slopes, and explodes with medieval tales and remarkable monuments. Be sure to visit the grave of St. Francis of Basilica Crypt. It's also essential to try Rocciata here—it's a delicious dessert that emulates the strudel.
Today’s 14.5 km hike blends spirituality and medieval monuments. After hiking towards the summit of Monte Subasio, you'll stop at Eremo delle Carceri, the caves where Franscesco used to meditate. Meander through the woods before reaching San Benedetto Abbey, which harks back to the IX century. Continue trekking until you reach Spello, where more medieval tales await.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, spend the morning exploring the numerous historical monuments scattered across Spello: Municipal Palace and Santa Maria Maggiore church. Eventually, you'll begin your 10 km trek to Vegnole, passing rolling vineyards and fields of olives en route.
Enjoy a yummy breakfast before taking a short transfer to Uppello. Begin by embarking on a steep incline to Rocca of Scandolaro. Eventually, the path will unfold into a grove of oak trees. Stop in Trevi, where it's worth tasting their delicious olive oil. Continue until you reach Bovara di Trevi.
Get ready to walk the same path St. Francis walked! The trail begins from Bovara di Trevi and continues until you arrive at Campello Alto. Admire the Spoleto valleys rolling beside here. Enjoy a brief stop at the convents of Pissignano and Campello, which sit amid lush olive trees. Bask in the tranquil, soothing vibes saturating the air.
Today marks your last day of twisting through Umbria’s remarkable, lush countryside. After a delicious breakfast, start by walking along a narrow path that will carry you to another remnant of history: the Santa Maria di Reggiano. Marvel at the centuries-old frescos adding colour to the walls. Continue your journey and pass by Eggi, a quaint village that sits amid olive groves, and walk along the old railway line until you reach Spoleto. For a more memorable introduction to the city, opt to detour and walk above the Tessino stream and the towering ancient aqueduct, and enjoy lovely views of Spoleto below.
The tour ends after breakfast unless you have booked an additional expedition.

I’ve been using 10A route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10A made that happen.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
