Cycle the Alpe Adria from Villach to Grado
The Alpe Adria Cycling from Villach to Grado will take you on an incredible journey that spans the mountainous terrain of both Austria and Italy. After leaving Villach behind and cycling through Carinthia, it will soon be ‘Servus, Austria – ciao Italia!’
Once you have crossed the border you will feel the unmistakable flair of beautiful Italy, as the bike route leads through diverse scenery that includes mountains, vineyards, and the breathtaking Italian coast. Cultural highlights throughout the tour will be self-evident, as you will experience the clash of Austrian and Italian influences that makes this region so unique! Are you ready to travel through the most beautiful parts of Austria and Italy? If so, prepare for the adventure of a lifetime on the Alpe Adria Cycling from Villach to Grado!
Once you have arrived in the Austrian town of Villach, you will check into your hotel and meet for a welcome briefing, before having the night to yourself to explore the town.
After breakfast, you will leave Villach along the river Gail and cross the Austria/Italy border. In the triangle of Italy, Austria, and Slovenia sprawls the canal valley, with the Italian city of Tarvis right in the centre of it. Here you will find Austrians, Slovenians, and Italians that have been living here next to each other for centuries, creating a unique blended culture unlike anywhere else. Explore the town and settle in for the night ahead of a big day of cycling!
Today you will cycle along perfectly developed paths that will lead you on a leisurely ride through the Kanaltal Valley. From your bike, you will marvel at the beauty of the Friulian alpine region with its intact, unspoilt nature and extensive forests. The day will finish in one of the picturesque villages located at the foothills of the Julian Alps.
At the southern exit of the Kanaltal Valley is one of the most beautiful historic villages of the Friulian-Julian-Veneto. The focal point of the village of Gemona del Friuli is the majestic cathedral Santa Maria Assunta, which will certainly blow you away! En route to Udine, you will come across the first vineyards along the cycle route. Once you arrive in town, you will feel and experience “la dolce vita” over a coffee enjoyed on the piazza or during a stroll through the alleyways whilst marveling at the late Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Feel the warm breeze of the sirocco! Today you will cycle through vast reed scenery and along canals towards the Gulf of Venice. In the Roman city of Aquileia, the so-called “second Rome”, you can take a break from cycling before reaching the end destination of your holiday. One of the most popular Adriatic beach resorts, the historic little fishing town of Grado, will not only excite you with the extensive sandy beach, but also with its historic harbour and narrow alleyways lined with lovely restaurants.
After waking up for one final breakfast, you will check out from your hotel and say ciao to the seaside town of Grado and the beautiful Adriatic Coast.

I’ve been using 10Adventures route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10Adventures made that happen.

I was going through a tough time and really needed a getaway so I decided to book a tour through 10Adventures. My trip to Peru changed my life in so many positive and eye-opening ways. I am so thankful for the kind, empathetic team at 10Adventures.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

My wife Sarah and I had a great experience booking our 7-day cycling trip through Portugal via 10Adventures. The communication between us and Nadine leading up the trip was top-notch!

Communicating with 10Adventures feels like talking with a family-run business. I love to explore and travel, and exploring with the comfort of knowing I can talk to the team at 10Adventures with almost immediate feedback helps to ease any stress that comes with adventuring!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
