Route Description for Spar Peak Trail
Beckoning the seasoned hikers and intrepid spirits, the Spar Peak Trail is no easy feat. Explore the timbered mountains and indulge in the diversity of flora and fauna. Located in a more remote and rustic area of the Kootenai National Forest, you will likely enjoy solitude as you climb. As this route travels through the preserved backcountry, it is important to be mindful of bears, cougars, elk, and wolves. While wildlife encounters are unlikely, we suggest carrying a can of bear spray!
With plenty of water in tow, your adventure up to the summit of Spar peak begins from the trailhead off National Forest Development Road 384. Your hike will begin by climbing through an area of lush undergrowth and towering trees. Enjoy the vegetation while you can because the higher you climb, the more barren and rockier the terrain becomes. Soon the route will near Cub Creek, offering a lovely, relaxing ambiance as you climb. After some hiking, the tree canopy will open, offering views of Spar Lake below.
Continue climbing, and you will eventually reach the summit of Spar Pak. Revel in the beauty of the mountainous landscape that stretches for miles. Snap a few photos of the rugged ranges and catch your breath before commencing your descent. To get back to the trailhead, simply retrace your footing down the mountainside.
