Hiking around Mt. Baker is a delight, with an incredible variety of trails and stunning views. The region is best-known for its epic winters and legendary powder skiing at Mt. Baker Ski Area. However, come summertime, the snow eventually melts out to reveal miles of pristine hiking trails. Nine of the hikes on our list offer views of Mount Baker, and the only one that doesn’t (Picture Lake) gets you up close and personal with the sky-piercing Mount Shuksan.

The Mount Baker region offers hiking for all abilities, from ADA-accessible and family friendly trails to epic multi-day backpacking routes. We’ve narrowed it down to the top 10 best day hikes. Along these trails you’ll encounter wildflowers and mountain blueberries. You’ll see alpine lakes, streams, groaning glaciers and, of course, you’ll get close-up views of the 10781ft stratovolcano itself: Mount Baker.

THE TOP 10 HIKES NEAR MOUNT BAKER, WASHINGTON

  1. Chain Lakes Loop (6.2mi, 1804ft, 4-6h): A classic summertime hike near Mount Baker, Chain Lakes Loop is an alpine circuit offering massive mountain and lake views, summer wildflowers, and blueberries to boot.
  2. Skyline Divide (7.2mi, 2001ft, 4-5h): Skyline Divide is a rolling ridgeline hike offering panoramic views from Shuksan-to-Baker. You might hear some whistling marmots. You could see one of the best seasonal wildflower shows around. This is such a great way to spend a sunny summer day with friends.
  3. Ptarmigan Ridge (9.4mi, 1401ft, 5-7h): The wildest trail accessible from Artist Point, Ptarmigan Ridge is a hike for solitude-seekers. In addition to wildflowers, berries, and wildlife-spotting potential, this climbing route offers fantastic close-up views of Mount Baker.
  4. Yellow Aster Butte (7.1mi, 2549ft, 4-6h): This hike has summer wildflowers, fall colors, twinkling tarns and 360-degree mountain views. All that adds up to Yellow Aster Butte being an undeniably spectacular trail in the Mount Baker region.
  5. Heliotrope Ridge (5.6mi, 1558ft, 3-4h): Heliotrope Ridge is a popular hike that crosses several creeks before reaching a spectacular overlook of Coleman Glacier. Along the way, hikers share the path with mountaineers attempting to summit Mount Baker.
  6. Lake Ann (8.4mi, 1801ft, 5-6h): Hike through wildflower meadows and talus slopes to Lake Ann for close-up views of Mount Shuksan’s thunderous glaciers. This is a longer hike that always leaves us tired, but also relaxed. Thankfully, the elevation isn’t too brutal.
  7. Hannegan Pass and Peak (10.1mi, 3100ft, 5-6h): Prepare for panoramic views aplenty when you hike up Hannegan Peak—a 6187ft, North Cascades vantage point showing off mounts Ruth, Shuksan, Baker, and many more. This is a tough hike, but it’s well worth it.
  8. Artist Ridge (1.2mi, 151ft, 1-2h): Boasting a huge payout for relatively little effort, this 1.2mi lollipop hike is an extremely popular summer photo destination. Everyone loves the views of Mount Shuksan, Mount Baker, and beyond.
  9. Table Mountain (2.4mi, 600ft, 2-3h): The short, steep hike to Table Mountain’s summit rewards trekkers with 360-degree mountain views, from the towering Mount Shuksan to the glacier-clad Mount Baker.
  10. Picture Lake (0.4mi, 0ft, 30 mins -1h): This 0.5mi paved loop is a perfect walk for strollers and wheelchairs. Aptly-named Picture Lake, this is popular for photo-ops due to easy access and incredible views of Mount Shuksan reflected in the lake.
