Route Description for Pohono Trail via McGurk Meadow Hike
Hiking the Pohono Trail via McGurk Meadow Trail is a thrilling experience that features breathtaking views as you navigate the technical terrain. Watch your heart rate climb as you traverse the vertiginous walls of Yosemite Valley. As much of the terrain is steep, rocky, and uneven, we strongly encourage you to wear a sturdy pair of footwear. Additionally, trekking poles may prove helpful on the climb back up to the trailhead! Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a good attitude to complete this rugged adventure. As this route covers a lot of ground, we suggest you head out early to get back to the trailhead before nightfall. Note: the National Park charges an entrance fee; refer to the NPS website for additional details.
Setting out from the trailhead, the Pohono Trail via McGurk Meadow Hike follows the McGurk Meadow Trail north through a lush meadow abundant with wildflowers in the summer, before entering the woodlands and encountering an intersection. Veer left here to be diverted onto the Pohono Trail. Follow this path northwest to the scenic overlook at Dewey Point for some incredible views of El Capitan and Half Dome. Revel in the views, then continue along the southern rim of the valley over Artist Creek. Here the trail will begin its descent to another amazing lookout at Inspiration Point, this time revealing views of Bridalveil Falls.
Follow the Pohono Trail all the way down to the junction with Old Wawona Road. Here, you can choose to descend further to the Tunnel View or retrace your steps up the steep terrain to return to the trailhead.
