The host of bird species that populate Peru’s Amazon Rainforest are as every bit diverse as they are unique. From the royal blue feathers of the Hyacinth Macaw to the vibrant orange mohawk of the Hoatzin, the birds of the Amazon Rainforest attract birdwatchers from near and far. With an astounding 1,300 bird species that call this rainforest home, there is never a dull moment when observing the colourful sky and chirp-filled trees in this birdwatcher's oasis.
The Amazon Rainforest is guaranteed to be found on just about any list of top birdwatching destinations to discover. From Peru to Ecuador, and Colombia to Brazil -- the opportunities to experience these birds in action are nearly endless.
Your transfer will meet you at the airport in Iquitos or at your hotel. You’ll spend the afternoon visiting the Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve, where your guides will help you spot several species of birds that are only known to live in this unique forest.
You might be lucky enough to spot birds including the Ancient Antwren, Mishana Tyrannulet, Allpahuayo Antbird, Northern Chestnut-tailed Antbird, Pompadour Cotinga, and Saffron-crested Tyrant Manakin.
After the excitement, its back to the hotel for dinner.
This morning on your Amazon expedition you’ll take another bird viewing trip into the Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve. Kep your eyes to the skies to see what species you’ll run into today!
In the afternoon you’ll take the four-hour boat ride up the river to the wilderness lodge on the Tahuayo tributary. Relax here for the night, enjoying the hum of the surrounding forest.
Good morning, jungle! Today, your guides will take you out for a full day of birding on the islands near the entrance of the Tahuayo tributary.
During the day you’ll be looking for sandpipers, herons, terns, skimmers, stilts, and plovers. You’ll stay on the river until the evening for a chance to see the nocturnal birds that live on the shoreline.
The wooden wilderness lodge that you’re staying at is perched on the edge of the varzea forest. In the morning you’ll be exploring this habitat with your guides. The biodiversity right outside of your door is truly astounding.
In the afternoon you’ll head out to visit the secondary growth ecosystems that surround the local villages. Then, it’s back to the lodge to relax for the evening.
Your morning Amazon birdwatching excursion will be in the tahuampa ecosystem, which is the flooded forest. The list of critters you could run into out here is nearly endless.
In the afternoon you’ll take a trip to “cocha”, or Oxbow Lake, to watch for the birds in the area. Enjoy the warmth and stillness of the water while you watch.
Today you’ll leave the flooded ecosystems behind and take a trip to the terra firme forest. Here you’ll spend the entire day birdwatching in the forest with solid ground.
Are you keeping a list of the species you’ve seen so far? You’re likely well over 100 by now!
You’ll take an early morning birdwatching excursion today, exploring the Palmichal Stream.
Then, continue birdwatching up the Tahuayo River. Tonight you will be arriving at your new accommodations at the remote research lodge. Settle in and review all the birds and other animals you’ve been able to enjoy up to now.
Today you will explore high and low forests. Your day will continue with spotting new bird species in palm swamp forest and finish your afternoon with an unforgettable time at Dolphin Lake.
Today, take a lovely trip to Lake Yarina, where you’ll spend the entire day birdwatching with your guides. Enjoy how the calm of the lake and scenery contrasts with the activity of the local birds and wildlife.
Afterwards, enjoy dinner at the lodge before bed.
This morning you’ll be returning to the main lodge to meet the boat back to Iquitos. Your transfer will drop you off at Iquitos Airport or your hotel.

I’ve been using 10A route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10A made that happen.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
