Highlights

Explore Andros, a walker’s paradise, on an 8-day pilgrimage

Contribute to the local trail maintenance organization, Andros Routes, by trimming overgrowth on your way.

Witness what makes each town on Andros unique, from coastal villages to homes perched in the mountains.

Get the quintessential Greek island scenery of white houses and blue-painted accents without all the tourists.

Savour fresh seafood and hearty Greek cuisine, sampling local taverns for lunch and dinner.

Find yourself, lose yourself, and find yourself again on this 8-day pilgrimage across Andros in Greek’s famous Cycladic Islands. During the tour, you’ll get acquainted with both seaside and mountain villages with undeniably Greek hospitality everywhere you go. This is a self-guided exploration, but you’ll be provided with a detailed map and guidebook, and your accommodation in B&Bs will be organized for you. All you have to do is walk!

While exploring this island, you’ll be supporting the local volunteer organization Andros Routes that maintains the trails on Andros. Your pilgrimage route is qualified as a European Quality Trail, which means you can expect well-marked paths and well-maintained terrain. For a pilgrimage with scenic variety, including coastal walks and mountain climbs, this tour will deliver!

Andros Island Pilgrimage Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Athens

It’s time to start the adventure! You’ll be picked up from Athens International Airport and transferred to Rafina Port to catch a ferry to Andros Island. Once you land on the island, you’ll take a public bus to Ormos Korthiou and settle into your hotel to get a good rest before the week ahead.

In your room, you’ll find a small welcome package with gardening gloves and a pruner to help maintain the trails—your (optional) contribution to the activities of the voluntary organization, Andros Routes. All you have to do is trim overgrowth while you walk.

Day 2 Walk to Andros Chora

Ready for your first full day? Here it is. Leaving Ormos Korthious behind, you’ll hike through remote areas of Andros island. Pass by hidden villages, old watermills, and walk across old stone bridges. Today’s route leads through pastoral landscapes, and you can extend the walk by detouring to an outpost and enjoying panoramic views over Andros.

The hike winds down through a valley, opening up to the capital of the island, Andros Chora. Your accommodation tonight is right on the beach.

Day 3 Hike to Menites

Savour your breakfast with beach views before you head out for the day. You’re heading inland, which means up, so make sure you have a hearty meal. As you ascend to central Andros, you’ll get more familiar with the island vegetation and perhaps be surprised by how lush it is. Visit a couple of monasteries, one which clings to the cliffside—an iconic style found all over Greece.

Pushing on, the trail will soon be walled in as you come upon Messaria, then shortly after is Menites. Find some solace as you explore the “lion” springs here, a stunning array of water fountains that were considered therapeutic in worlds past.

Follow a well-walked trading route high enough to get sweeping views of the Aegean Sea extending out to the horizon. On the route, you’ll get plenty of landscape changes, from open views to green valleys, eventually coming into a wooded area that leads you to Apikia.

Find your hotel, and then grab a delicious Greek feast to refuel.
