Bike Through Austria on the Danube Family Cycling Tour
For those travellers who want to fully experience the rich culture and natural landscapes of Austria with their loved ones, the Danube Family Cycling Tour is the ultimate adventure! While travelling the entire length of the Danube Cycle Path would lead you on a lengthy journey through 8 different countries, this tour stays within Austria and highlights all of the amazing sights, sounds, and tastes that the country has to offer. From historic cities to rugged mountain peaks, you will leave no stone unturned while out on the Danube Family Cycling Tour!
The capital of Upper Austria welcomes you! After arriving in Linz you can Take a leisurely stroll through the amazing historic centre, watch the animals in Linz Zoo, or visit one of the exciting museums. Travellers who booked rental bikes will find them ready in the hotel.
The first day of cycling on the tour will see you make your way out of the city along the banks of the River Danube. After passing by the local recreation area, the Pleschinger See, houses will become fewer and you will experience more nature. Nearby Lake Ausee would be a great opportunity for a break, as it features an Aqua Park with slides, climbing towers, a slip & slide, and running areas to crank up the fun-factor. Continuing onwards, you will veer slightly away from the course of the River Danube and continue as far as Enns.
Here in Austria’s oldest town Enns, you can visit the Roman Circular Path, enjoy a water park featuring a 65 meter long slide, or take a stroll through the castle grounds. You will then return to the Danube river bank and continue along the flat cycle path across the idyllic scenery of the Machland. On the way to Grein your next highlight awaits: the outdoor museum Celtic Village in Mitterkirchen. Experience Austria’s prehistory and transport yourself to a different time during a walk through the Celtic Village.
Grein has historically been referred to as “the Pearl of the Strudengau region”, and it is still an enchanting town today! As a bonus it is also home to a climbing gym and public outdoor swimming pool, offering plenty of opportunity for activities. From this point onwards the Danube River Valley narrows and displays some incredible scenery within the Strudengau-region, all the way to the day’s endpoint in Marbach.
Day 5 of the tour will see you enjoy a brilliant breakfast, before lounging around in the Nibelungenbad pool of Marbach. Today you cycle for just a few kilometres until you reach the scenic Wachau region, the name of which is enough to make anyone’s mouth water due to the diverse regional produce that is grown here, such as apricots and apples. The Wachau region offers delicious regional cuisine on the highest level for the whole family!
Today will begin by exploring Melk - the gateway to the Wachau! A visit to the monumental Benedictine monastery is a must before continuing your tour in a different fashion. Here, you will take a break from cycling and instead embark on a fun boat trip to Krems. You can also choose to disembark the boat earlier, in Spitz or Dürnstein, and cycle the final distance, or skip the boat ride altogether and cycle the whole way – the choice is yours! One way or another, beautiful scenery of lovingly laid out vineyards and vast plains awaits you!
To start the final day of your adventure you will enjoy a leisurely train journey to Tulln, where you will begin the final cycling stage to Vienna. The feeling is simply overwhelming as you cycle the final kilometres across the Danube Island to reach the endpoint of the holiday in Austria’s capital. Here you can explore countless landmarks and attractions, such as haunted houses, a wax museum, the most renowned Ferris wheel in the world, as well as numerous cafés and the zoo at Schönbrunn. There is so much for the entire family to do here, but Vienna in itself is a unique, magnificent highlight!
After waking up and enjoying one final breakfast, you will pack your things and say auf wiedersehen to Vienna for an individual departure.

I’ve been using 10Adventures route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10Adventures made that happen.

I was going through a tough time and really needed a getaway so I decided to book a tour through 10Adventures. My trip to Peru changed my life in so many positive and eye-opening ways. I am so thankful for the kind, empathetic team at 10Adventures.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

My wife Sarah and I had a great experience booking our 7-day cycling trip through Portugal via 10Adventures. The communication between us and Nadine leading up the trip was top-notch!

Communicating with 10Adventures feels like talking with a family-run business. I love to explore and travel, and exploring with the comfort of knowing I can talk to the team at 10Adventures with almost immediate feedback helps to ease any stress that comes with adventuring!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I tend to have a lot of questions before travelling and was so happy to find that the team at 10Adventures responded to every single one of my inquiries in a timely fashion. I was never left waiting and waiting for a response. This was much appreciated!

I have horrible dietary issues making it super hard to book a pre-planned trip sometimes, but the communication through 10Adventures helped me navigate this situation! I am so grateful for all of their help. I cant wait to book with them again!

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.

Wow! I am so happy with the experience I had with booking through 10Adventures for my tour in Italy! I worked with Nadine and she was super easy-going and helpful when it came to tweaking the itinerary provided on the website. 10/10 would book through 10Adventures again.
