Cycling in Chile
Chile is a country built for a bike: a 4,000 km ribbon running from the Atacama in the north, through the vineyards and lakes of the centre, to the fjords and ice of Patagonia in the south. Each stretch rides differently, from bone-dry desert to soaking rainforest, and the guided trips on offer here focus on the wildest of them all, the deep south. What to expect
Expect a mix of smooth pavement and rough gravel, known locally as ripio, long days in the saddle, sharp climbs and fast descents, and Patagonia’s changeable weather, from sun to sideways rain and wind in a single day. The trips run with a support vehicle carrying gear, the ferry crossings arranged, and the option to rent bikes or e-bikes, so a good level of fitness and some touring experience matter more than owning the perfect setup. The reward is near-empty roads and the chance of Patagonian wildlife, one of the draws of the region’s wildlife tours, from condors to guanacos.
When to go
The riding season is the austral summer, from November to March, when the roads are open and the days are long. December to February is the peak, with the mildest weather and the busiest roads and ferries; November and March are quieter but cooler and wetter. Outside this window many services close and the weather turns hard, so the tours run only in the summer.
Getting there
Most rides start from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas in the north of the Carretera Austral, or from Coyhaique and its airport at Balmaceda in the middle, both a short flight from Santiago. The Torres del Paine multisport begins much further south, usually via Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales. Because Chile is so long, internal flights and the tour’s own transport do most of the work between start and finish points.
