Guided Tibet Tours

Participating in a guided Tibet tour is the best way to get a fully immersive adventure experience in this magical land. The challenging terrain, high altitude, and fascinating culture make Tibet an ideal location for a guided tour, as opposed to a self-guided tour. Your experienced guides will arrange transportation, lodging, and an exciting itinerary for you.

Tibet guides will go one step further to ensure you stay safe and healthy while on your adventure since altitude sickness is a genuine possibility. These guided Tibet tours are designed with that in mind, and many of the more challenging tours have acclimatization built-in.

Tibet’s captivating culture, history, and beautiful people are best experienced with the help of a guide who will introduce you to locals and share their extensive knowledge – and it alleviates the stress of international travel!

Self-guided Tibet Tours

It’s certainly appropriate to sign up for a self-guided Tibet tour instead of a guided tour, as long as you’re comfortable traveling on your own. When you book a self-guided tour of Tibet, these same expert guides will still plan the hardest parts of your trip for you – the best places to stay, how to get around, and the sites you shouldn’t pass up. Once the itinerary is prepared for you, you’re on your own, free to explore at your own pace. If you’d like a little more privacy on your adventure while still having the benefit of a guide take care of logistics, a self-guided tour is the way to go.

Tibet Hiking Tours

Many Tibet hiking tours start in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and one of the highest cities in the world. Its elevation makes it a perfect location to get acclimated to the altitude before starting on your trek. Lhasa is a sprawling city full of beautiful temples and historic sites worthy of a few days of exploring on foot.

But you're probably itching to start hiking the Himalayas, which is what brings most adventure travelers to Tibet. Trekking to Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular hiking tours in Tibet. This multi-week hike combines a few days of altitude preparation, a few days of trekking to Everest, and another few days of exploring Old Tingri village and monasteries in the area.

Tibet isn’t only about Everest, though. Mount Kailash is the holiest of mountains in Tibet, and the pilgrimage route provides an unforgettable adventure. After exploring Lhasa and the Potala Palace, you’ll start your journey towards Mount Kailash Kora. Highlights of the route include glaciers, the scenic high-altitude Yamdrok and Manasarovar Lakes, and several monasteries tucked high in the mountains. If you can’t spare the time to complete this entire circuit, you still can’t go wrong on a hiking tour to Yamdrok Lake.

Tibet Cycling Tours

Many adventure travelers think of Tibet as a trekking paradise, but there are also numerous world-renowned Tibet cycling tour routes as well. One of the most challenging cycling tours is from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp, a nearly three-week tour of challenging climbing along a spectacularly scenic highway. This route takes you past many beautiful monasteries and austere mountain passes before arriving at your destination, the base of the tallest mountain in the world.

The cycling tour to Everest Base Camp isn't for the faint of heart, and it requires a significant time commitment. If you're not confident of your fitness level or don't have the time required for Everest, there are still numerous, equally-beautiful cycling tours for you. The route between Lhasa and Ganden Monastery is one such route, a comfortable ride past lakes and farms that takes less than a week, including acclimatization time. The prize is Ganden Monastery, one of the most impressive monasteries in Tibet, over 600 years old. If you’re looking for something a little more intermediate between the Everest and Ganden Monastery rides, the cycling tour from Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake is worth considering.

Scenery in Tibet

The scenery in Tibet is more than just barren desert, glacial moraines, and towering mountains. This grand landscape, called the “roof of the world,” is home to some of the highest civilizations in the world. The Tibetan Plateau is roughly 12,000 feet in elevation yet features alpine zones, tropical zones, and subtropical zones, yielding a variety of flora and fauna. Rushing glacially-fed rivers have carved impressive gorges throughout the landscape, and these rivers feed the hundreds upon hundreds of lakes found in Tibet. Northern Tibet is where most of the limited agriculture takes place, where grassy fields feed yaks and sheep. To top off the spectacular natural scenery, Tibet has some of the most ornate, beautiful temples in Asia, backdropped by the tallest mountains in the world.
