10 Ways to Get Outside this Spring

    1. Go for a Hike

The weather during spring can often be cold and wet, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy an incredible hike! Getting out onto the trails in spring is a magical experience that really highlights the beauty of nature, with plenty of plant and animal species shaking off the cold of winter and coming to life. It’s also has a number of mental, physical, and emotional benefits that can help you reset after a long winter indoors, which is critical for your overall well being.

During this time – especially in the early weeks of spring – trails will often be muddy and in relatively poor shape, so if you plan on hiking, be sure to stick to dedicated paths to avoid damaging the environment around you. Always remember that if you plan on utilizing the outdoors, be sure to minimize your impact on nature and Leave No Trace every time you get on the trail.

    2. Exercise Your Green Thumb

Nothing brings on the excitement of spring like getting your hands dirty and doing some work in the garden. Whether you decide to plant flowers or vegetables, exercising your green thumb can be a great way to take part in the wonderful feeling of rebirth that spring inevitably brings about year after year.

    3. Get Your First Run in

This entry on the list might not affect you too much depending on where you live in the world, but if you reside in a cold climate there is nothing better than the day that the snow finally clears and you are able to get outside for your first run of the season! It might still be cold, but if you prepare with the right base layers and stretch properly, that first run of the season can be one of the greatest feelings of freedom you’ll have all year long!

    4. Watch for Wildlife

As mentioned above, spring is a great time of awakening when it comes to animal activity outdoors, so why not take advantage of the incredible exhibits that Mother Nature puts on display and watch for wildlife?! From birds and mammals to insects and fish, the animal kingdom really bounces back and comes alive during the spring season, so make sure to get outside with a pair of binoculars and keep your eyes peeled!

    5. Go Camping

Camping is one of the most freeing pastimes that there is, immersing you in nature and providing access to countless outdoor activities that are great for the mind, body, and soul. It’s also a great relationship building tool that allows you to form deeper bonds with those around you, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

While many people will opt for the warmer temperatures of summer, there is something truly special about camping during the shoulder seasons, with the sights and sounds of spring really making the outdoors come alive – just make sure that you prepare in case it gets a bit wet!

    6. Get in the Saddle

As with hiking or running, it can be a bit of a challenge to get out for a bike ride during the winter months – and let’s face it, Peloton just isn’t quite the same as biking outside! It might still be a bit rainy depending on how early in the season you set out, but getting in the saddle for an incredible spring ride is a refreshing way to kick those winter blues to the curb!

    7. Explore a Farmer’s Market

Exploring your local Farmer’s market is a great spring activity that has a number of amazing benefits, including socialization (which we all need after a long winter!), supporting local farmers/businesses, and kickstarting a healthy lifestyle for the year!

    8. Fly a Kite

Flying a kite is one of those simple childhood pleasures that seems to get forgotten with age, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get outside and enjoy the windy conditions that spring has to offer! Whether you set out with the kids for their first kite flying experience or simply want to disconnect from the outside world and ponder your thoughts, this easy-going activity shouldn’t be overlooked as a fun pastime for all ages!

    9. Train for Summer Adventures

This one is related to a number of other activities on this list, but taking the time to train for summer adventures can be a great way to enjoy the nicer weather of spring, prepare your body for more intense activities, or even just get yourself beach ready! For those who enjoy physically demanding activities like running marathons, backpacking, or multi-day cycling tours, starting your training in the spring is a great way to kickstart that healthy lifestyle that your body will thank you for later on in the year!

    10. Play in the Rain!

Another childhood favourite that we seem to let fall by the wayside as adults, playing in the rain can be a freeing – albeit somewhat goofy – experience that can help to relieve stress and provide a bit of a mental reset that we all need from time to time. So grab the kids and go jump in the biggest puddle you can find!
