Canyons of M’Goun and the Happy Valley Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Marrakech

Your tour begins in Marrakech, where you’ll be picked up from the airport and taken to your hotel. If you have time, you’ll take a sightseeing walk in the medina and souks.

Enjoy dinner in a local restaurant and then rest up for the adventure ahead.

Day 2 Drive to the Ait Bougmez Valley

After breakfast, begin driving through beautiful stretches of road to get to the Ait Bougmez Valley. You’ll pass the Ouzoud Waterfalls, which are regarded as the most beautiful in Morocco. You’ll stop for lunch and then visit the dinosaur museum in the mountain-clad city of Azilal.

Later on, you’ll drive over the unbelievable Oughbar Pass (2200m, 7217ft), where great views of the M’Goun range unfold. End the trip in Imleghs village, where you’ll have the chance to observe the daily life of the Berber people who call this place home.

Day 3 Immersion in the Valley of Bouguemez

In the morning, prepare your breakfast with a local Berber family, then set out on a hike to the sacred shrine of Sidi Moussa, a saint revered for his ability to cure disease and increase fertility in local women. The shrine offers panoramic views of the Valley of Bouguemez (the “Happy Valley”) from its spot atop a hill.

Descend from the shrine and explore the dinosaur footprints in the village of Ageurd N’ouzrou before riding a mule back to your guesthouse.

Day 4 Hiking the TiziN’Ait Imi Pass

Today marks the beginning of your hiking adventures! Set out in the morning with your team of mules through verdant fields. You’ll start to climb up to TizN’Ait Imi Pass (2900m, 9514ft), where you’ll be treated to wide views over the whole Atlas mountain range from north to south.

End your hike near the village of Tighremt N’Ait Hamed where you’ll bivouac tonight.

Day 5 Trek to the M’Goun Canyons

After breakfast and a quick tear-down of camp, you’ll begin to descend through the Ouzirimt Valley alongside the river. You’re heading to the entrances to the renowned M’Goun gorges and canyons, surely one of the coolest places you’ll ever hike.

Rest up tonight in preparation for your canyon hike tomorrow.

Day 6 Hiking Through the Canyons

Reminiscent of Arizona and Utah, the canyons and gorges of M’Goun are painted in red and shaped smooth by years of water erosion. Spend today hiking through the famous M’Goun canyons, where descending into the gorges offers insane scenery. The walls rise several hundred metres above in some places and the water is occasionally knee-deep.

Arrive at the village of Tiranimine, where you’ll set up camp.

Day 7 Gardens of the Atlas

Spend today in the “Gardens of the Atlas,” an area along the banks of the river where villages are built right into the middle of the gorges and fruit trees, roses, and kasbahs dominate the landscape. This is a place unlike any other, and you’re guaranteed to be amazed by what you discover in the gorges.

Day 8 Return to Marrakech

After breakfast at the guesthouse, you’ll hop in the bus to Kelaat Mgouna, a small town bordering the Sahara Desert. If you’re here at the beginning of May you’ll catch their annual festival of roses, where resplendent bouquets are cut to traditional music and dancing. Any other time of year, the area is still beautiful.

Continue to Ouarzazate, the “gateway to the desert” and the most famous kasbah in Morocco. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been featured in plenty of movies as well as Game of Thrones. You’ll reach Marrakech by late afternoon and have time to enjoy the city before bed.

Day 9 Exploring Marrakech

Didn’t have enough time to explore Marrakech before leaving for the mountains? Today the city is the focus, giving you ample time to experience its highlights with a guide: The Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia Mosque, the medina, the Jewish Quarter, and Djemaa El Fna square, filled with fortune-tellers, acrobats, and snake charmers.

You’ll spend the evening touring the food scene of the city, sampling at a curated list of local eateries and street food spots.
