Summit and Canyons of M’Goun Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Marrakech

Your tour begins in Marrakech, where you’ll be picked up from the airport and taken to your hotel. If you have time, you’ll take a sightseeing walk in the medina and souks.

Enjoy dinner in a local restaurant and then rest up for the adventure ahead.

Day 2 Drive to the Ait Bougmez Valley

Eat breakfast at your hotel before hitting the road, driving along beautiful stretches to get to the Ait Bougmez Valley. You’ll pass the Ouzoud Waterfalls, which are regarded as the most beautiful in Morocco. You’ll eat lunch and then visit the dinosaur museum in the mountain-clad city of Azilal.

Later on, you’ll drive through the outstanding Oughbar Pass (2200m, 7217ft), where incredible views of the M’Goun range unfold. End the trip in Imleghs village, where you’ll have the chance to observe the daily life of the Berber people who call this place home.

Day 3 Immersion Day in the Valley of Bouguemez

In the morning, make breakfast with a local Berber family, then enjoy a hike to the sacred shrine of Sidi Moussa, a saint revered for his ability to cure disease. The shrine offers panoramic views of the Valley of Bougumez from its place atop a hill.

Descend from the shrine and explore the dinosaur footprints in the village of Ageurd N’ouzrou before riding a mule back to your guesthouse.

Day 4 Hike to Azib Arouss

Today marks the beginning of your ascent of M’Goun! In the morning, you’ll meet with your team of mule drivers and cooks, starting a lovely walk through green pastures and adobe villages. You’ll pick up the trail that leads to the Assif N’Arouss Valley, passing the Ait Said hamlet. From here, you’ll be able to begin appreciating the view of M’Goun.

End your hike in Azib Arouss, where you’ll bivouac tonight.

Distance: 5-6 hours, 350m elevation gain

Day 5 Trek to Tarkeddit Base Camp

Pack up camp and then head towards the Aghouri Pass (3400m, 11,154ft), continuing onto the Tarkeddit Plateau, where a wide pasture grows in the summer and nomadic tribes make their homes. You’ll sleep at base camp here tonight, preparing for your ascent early tomorrow morning.

Day 6 Ascent of M’Goun

Today is the day! Wake early and eat breakfast at camp, then pack up and start your ascent of M’Goun. While the trek isn’t technically demanding, it’ll be a full day, so take your time to enjoy the views and rest as you need to. M’Goun is Morocco’s second-highest peak, and you’ll be awarded splendid views over the High Atlas Mountains and the valleys below. Savour your time at the top!

If the full ascent is too much for you, you can opt to enjoy a much easier trail on the mountain or stay at camp and spend the day with the local shepherds.

Day 7 Valley Walk and Camping at Ain Aflafal

Today will be nice and relaxed to let you recover from yesterday’s incredible summit. Take a slow stroll along the valley of Oulilimt, decorated with unique geological formations. You’ll have the chance to meet the local Berber people and their animals before making camp near the springs of Ain Aflafal.

Day 8 Following the River to the Canyons

After breakfast, you’ll begin to descend through the Ouzirimt Valley alongside the river. You’re heading to the entrances to the renowned M’Goun gorges and canyons, surely one of the coolest places you’ll ever hike!

Rest up tonight in preparation for your canyon hike tomorrow.

Day 9 Canyons and Gorges

You’ve been high, now it’s time to get low. Spend today hiking through the famous M’Goun canyons, where descending into the gorges offers insane scenery, with the walls rising several hundred metres above and the water is occasionally knee-deep.

Arrive at the village of Tiranimine, where you’ll set up camp.

Day 10 Gardens of the Atlas

Spend today in the “Gardens of the Atlas,” an area along the banks of the river where villages are built right into the middle of the gorges and fruit trees, roses, and kasbahs dominate the landscape. This is a place unlike any other, and you won’t believe your eyes as you explore it!

Day 11 Return to Marrakech

After breakfast and mint tea, you’ll hop in the bus to Kelaat Mgouna, a small town bordering the Sahara Desert. If you’re here at the beginning of May you’ll catch their annual festival of roses, where resplendent bouquets are cut to traditional music and dancing.

Continue to Ouarzazate, the most famous kasbah in Morocco and a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site featured in plenty of movies. You’ll reach Marrakech by late afternoon and have time to enjoy the city before bed.

Day 12 Exploring Marrakech

Didn’t have enough time to explore Marrakech before leaving for the mountains? No worries. Today the city is the focus, giving you ample time to experience its highlights with a guide: The Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia Mosque, the medina, the Jewish Quarter, and Djemaa El Fna Square, filled with fortune-tellers, acrobats, and snake charmers.

You’ll spend the evening touring the food scene of the city, sampling at a curated list of local eateries and street food spots.
