Planning your Hiking trip to Portuguese Camino de Santiago in 2026

The route

After the Camino Frances, the Camino Portugues is the most walked of the Camino de Santiago routes. It runs north through Portugal and crosses into Spain to finish at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Most of the way follows the inland Central route, through historic towns, Roman roads and vineyards, with a Coastal route along the Atlantic as the main alternative. It is part of the Self-Guided Portuguese Camino tours and of Self-Guided Portugal tours.

What to expect

The walking here is self-guided: you follow the waymarked route at your own pace, with route notes and a GPS track, your luggage moved on to the next stop, and rooms booked ahead. The Camino Portugues is the flattest of the main routes, with no big climbs, though there are cobbled lanes and some road walking, and Galicia rolls a little near the end. As one of Europe’s great pilgrimage tours, it sits among 10Adventures’ wider walking tours, and walkers carry a pilgrim passport, collecting stamps along the way for the certificate in Santiago.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to walk, roughly April to June and September to October, with mild days and the trail at its best. Summer is hot and the busiest stretch, especially the last 100 km, and Galicia can be wet in any season, so a rain layer is always worth packing. Much of the route can be walked year-round.

Top trips

Walks on offer on the Camino Portugues, shorter to longer:

  1. Self-Guided Camino Portugues: Last 100km from Tui 8 days walking the final stretch from Tui into Santiago, enough for the Compostela.
  2. Camino Portugues: Self-Guided from Porto to Tui 8 days through northern Portugal from Porto to the Spanish border.
  3. Self-Guided Camino Portugues: Deluxe Hotels 8 days on the last 100 km with upgraded stays.
  4. Self-Guided Camino Portugues Spiritual Variant Pilgrimage 9 days from Tui to Santiago by way of the Spiritual Variant.
  5. Self-Guided Camino Portuguese from Lisbon to Coimbra 11 days on the long southern start out of Lisbon.
  6. Self-Guided Camino Portugues: Tui to Finisterre 13 days from Tui through Santiago and on to the coast at Finisterre.
  7. Self-Guided Complete Camino Portugues Pilgrimage 14 days walking the route in full.

FAQ for Portuguese Camino de Santiago Hiking Tours

What is the Camino Portugues?

It is the Portuguese branch of the Camino de Santiago and, after the Camino Frances, the second most walked of all the routes. It runs north through Portugal, crosses into Spain, and finishes at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Where do most pilgrims start?

Most start in Porto, which makes a walk of about two weeks, or at Tui on the Spanish border for the last hundred kilometres or so into Santiago. The full route from Lisbon is far longer and much less travelled.

Are the tours guided or self-guided?

All the walking here is self-guided: you follow the waymarked route at your own pace, with notes and a GPS track, luggage transfers and booked accommodation.

Can I get the Compostela?

Yes. Walking from Tui covers the final hundred-odd kilometres, which qualifies, as long as you collect stamps in a pilgrim passport along the way and walk the last stretch into Santiago. Shorter starts closer to the city do not, which is why Tui is the usual choice.

Central route or Coastal route?

These walks mostly follow the inland Central route, through historic towns, Roman roads and vineyards. The Camino also has a Coastal route along the Atlantic, and the two join at Redondela in Galicia before the final stretch to Santiago.

When is the best time to walk?

Spring and autumn, roughly April to June and September to October, are the most comfortable. Summer is hot and the busiest, and Galicia can be wet in any season, so pack a rain layer.
