Planning your Hiking trip to Portuguese Coastal Camino de Santiago in 2026
The route
The Coastal Camino runs north from Porto along the Atlantic, on boardwalks and beachfront paths through fishing towns like Vila do Conde, Esposende and Viana do Castelo, before crossing into Spain by ferry over the Minho. From there it carries on up the Galician coast through Baiona and Vigo, then turns inland to join the Central route at Redondela for the final stretch to Santiago de Compostela. The full walk from Porto is around 280 km. It is part of the Self-Guided Portuguese Coastal Camino tours and of Self-Guided Portugal tours.
Choosing your walk
There are a few ways to take it on. The shortest popular option starts at Baiona or Vigo and covers the last hundred kilometres or so into Santiago in about a week, enough for the Compostela. Starting in Porto gives the full coastal walk of roughly two weeks. Near the end you can branch onto the Spiritual Variant, which loops along the Ria de Arousa and includes a short boat leg, and there is also a Caminha variant on the way north. For a gentler trip, slower-paced versions break the route into shorter days. It runs alongside the inland Self-Guided Portuguese Camino tours, which take the Central route instead.
What to expect
The route follows the coast for much of the way, on boardwalks, promenades and quiet lanes, which makes for flat, easy walking, though there is a fair amount of hard surface underfoot. You go at your own pace, with route notes and a GPS track, your luggage moved on to the next stop, and rooms booked ahead. As one of Europe’s great pilgrimage tours, it sits among 10Adventures’ wider walking tours, and walkers carry a pilgrim passport, collecting stamps along the way for the certificate in Santiago.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to walk, roughly April to June and September to October, with mild days and ocean breezes. Summer is warm and the busiest, with the coast at its liveliest, and Galicia can be wet in any season, so a rain layer is always worth packing. Much of the route can be walked year-round.

FAQ for Portuguese Coastal Camino de Santiago Hiking Tours
What is the Portuguese Coastal Camino?
It is the seaside version of the Camino Portugues, the Portuguese branch of the Camino de Santiago. It follows the Atlantic north from Porto before turning inland to finish at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
How is it different from the Central route?
The Coastal route hugs the ocean, on boardwalks and beachfront paths through fishing towns, while the Central route runs inland through historic towns, Roman roads and vineyards. The two come together at Redondela in Galicia for the last stretch to Santiago.
Where do most pilgrims start?
Most start in Porto for the full coastal walk, or at Vigo or Baiona for the last hundred kilometres or so into Santiago. You can really begin anywhere along the route.
Are the tours guided or self-guided?
All the walking here is self-guided: you go at your own pace, with route notes and a GPS track, luggage transfers and booked accommodation.
Can I get the Compostela?
Yes. Starting at Vigo or Baiona covers the final hundred-odd kilometres, which qualifies, as long as you collect stamps in a pilgrim passport along the way and walk the last stage into Santiago.
When is the best time to walk?
Spring and autumn, roughly April to June and September to October, are the most comfortable. Summer is warm and the busiest, and Galicia can be wet in any season, so pack a rain layer.
Can I combine it with the Central route or carry on past Santiago?
Yes. The coastal and inland routes can be linked, and some walkers carry on beyond Santiago to the coast at Finisterre.
