Route Description for Sunrise Lakes Hike

Immerse yourself in the best that Yosemite has to offer along the Sunrise Lakes Trail. This epic excursion travels into California’s high country, revealing breathtaking vistas of Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada’s granite peaks that line the horizon – not to mention the postcard-worthy lakes nestled in the mountain basin! With ample scenery to keep you motivated as you climb, there is no reason not to add this wonderful adventure to your Yosemite itinerary. Note: the National Park charges an entrance fee, refer to the NPS website for additional information.

Embark on your expedition along the Sunrise Lakes Trail from the Clouds Rest Trailhead. From here, track the Clouds Rest Trail through mixed pine forests and exposed meadowlands. The trail is deceiving, as the initial stages of the hike are level and easy going; however, you will soon reach the vertiginous section of the path. Navigate the switchbacks up the steep terrain, minding your footing on the path. Soon, the trail will plateau and you will be guided to an intersection. Veer left at the junction and you will be diverted onto the Sunrise Lakes Trail.

Wander northeast along this route to the three, charming alpine lakes. If you are sweaty and hot, rejuvenate your sore body by hopping into the chilly waters! Explore the lakes nestled amongst granite slabs and, when you are ready, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
