Where to Hike in United States
Activities in United States
The United States has more great paved climbing than almost anywhere, and a cycling culture to match. Road biking in Colorado is the natural starting point, and road biking in Boulder is its heart, with Flagstaff Mountain, Left Hand Canyon and Boulder Canyon climbing straight out of town and the Peak to Peak Highway running along the Continental Divide.
Colorado also holds the highest paved roads on the continent. Mount Blue Sky, west of Denver, tops out at 14,264 feet and is billed as the highest paved road in North America, while Trail Ridge Road crosses Rocky Mountain National Park at 12,183 feet and Independence Pass carries you over the divide into Aspen.
Further afield, Going-to-the-Sun Road through Glacier National Park in Montana is one of the great cycling roads anywhere, climbing to Logan Pass at 6,646 feet, and each spring it is plowed but still closed to cars, which gives cyclists a window with the road to themselves. California offers the Pacific Coast Highway and the high Sierra passes, Oregon has the McKenzie Pass and the rim road at Crater Lake, and Hawaii has the long haul up Haleakala. For flatter days, the country has excellent rail trails, including the Great Allegheny Passage and the Katy Trail.
Season is set by elevation and latitude. The Front Range in Colorado is dry and sunny enough to bike for most of the year, while the high passes only clear from late May into June and shut again by October. Everything in the mountain west sits high, so give yourself a few days to acclimatize if you are arriving from sea level. Most people bike here independently, though guided and supported trips are available.

What’s New in 2026
- Glacier National Park dropped vehicle reservations for 2026, the first time in five years, so you can now enter without a timed-entry ticket. Going-to-the-Sun Road opened to cars on 22 June, after cyclists had the full length to themselves from 18 to 21 June. Once it is open to traffic, bike restrictions apply through 27 September: no eastbound cycling from Apgar to Logan Pass between 12 pm and 6 pm, and no westbound cycling from Logan Pass to Apgar between 3 pm and 6 pm. Logan Pass also has a new three-hour parking limit.
- Rocky Mountain National Park went the other way and kept its timed-entry system, which runs from 22 May to mid-October 2026. Trail Ridge Road opened for the season on 29 May and sits inside the standard reservation window between 9 am and 2 pm. The system is built around vehicles, so confirm the park’s current guidance if you are arriving by bike.
- Mount Blue Sky is open again after a year off. The highest paved road in North America was closed through 2025 while crews repaired severe buckling and drainage problems, and the upper gates reopened on 22 May 2026. Reservations are required for the fee-access upper road and the booking system changed this year. The peak was renamed from Mount Evans.
- Plan around elevation. The Colorado Front Range is open for most of the year, but the big passes, including Blue Sky, Trail Ridge, Independence and Logan, only clear from late May into June and close again by autumn. Altitude is the thing visitors underestimate: Boulder sits at roughly 1,655 m before you climb anything.

Canyon and mountain climbs
- Flagstaff Mountain road bike climb: steep and twisting from the base of the Flatirons, and one of the steepest roads in the Boulder area.
- Left Hand Canyon road bike route: a long, steady climb on a shaded shoulder, and one of the best days out on the Front Range.
- Peak to Peak Highway cycling route: a high, scenic road running alongside the Continental Divide, with variations to suit the day you want.
- Boulder Canyon road bike route: the most scenic canyon in the area, though narrow shoulders and steady traffic make it one for confident cyclists.
- Boulder to Jamestown bike route: the best of Left Hand Canyon, carrying on to a small historic town in the mountains.
- Lee Hill Road climb: higher and longer than Olde Stage, and a more committing day overall.
- Olde Stage Road climb: the classic first climb in Boulder, short and straightforward with a fun descent off the back.
Flatter routes and paths
- North 63rd Street cycling loop: the classic Boulder circuit, gently rolling with mountain views and a generous shoulder.
- US 36 to Lyons bike route: popular with locals heading north of town, and a long-standing training ground for professional athletes.
- Boulder Creek Trail bike path: the most scenic and continuous of Boulder’s car-free options, running through the middle of town.

Frequently Asked Questions About Road Biking in the USA
Where is the best road biking in the USA?
Boulder, Colorado is the epicentre, with Flagstaff Mountain, Left Hand Canyon and Boulder Canyon climbing straight out of town and the Peak to Peak Highway along the Continental Divide. Colorado also has the highest paved roads on the continent, including Mount Blue Sky and Trail Ridge Road. Beyond it, Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, the Pacific Coast Highway in California and the McKenzie Pass in Oregon are among the finest cycling roads anywhere.
Can you cycle Going-to-the-Sun Road?
Yes, and the best window is in spring, when the road has been plowed but has not yet opened to cars. In 2026 cyclists had the full length from 18 to 21 June before it opened to traffic on 22 June. Once cars are on it, restrictions apply through 27 September: no eastbound cycling from Apgar to Logan Pass between 12 pm and 6 pm, and no westbound between Logan Pass and Apgar from 3 pm to 6 pm. Glacier has no vehicle reservations in 2026.
When is road biking season in the USA?
It depends on elevation and latitude. The Colorado Front Range around Boulder is dry and sunny enough to bike nearly year-round, and the desert Southwest is best in spring and autumn. The high passes, including Mount Blue Sky, Trail Ridge Road and Logan Pass, only clear from late May into June and close again by October, so a summer trip is the only way to link them.
