Route Description for Democrat Mountain Hike

The Democrat Mountain Trail is a demanding summit adventure in the Pike National Forest. Ascend the rocky terrain which culminates at the summit of Democrat Mountain, overlooking the mountainous Colorado landscape. Pack plenty of water and wear layers as the exposed summit will likely be windy. This excursion is a great ascent for those beginning their journey of summit hikes in Colorado. Note that the road up to the trailhead is rugged! Vehicles with four-wheel drive and high ground clearance are recommended.

From the trailhead, take the path signposted Bard Creek Road. Hike up the wide, dirt route to a junction. Here, turn left onto Alvarado Road. Navigate a set of rocky switchbacks and under tree shade. Hike the forested path for a few clicks before encountering another intersection. Turn left, continuing along the Alvarado Road and past several old mine shafts. Ascend the rocky terrain to the summit of Democrat Mountain.

From the exposed summit of the Democrat Mountain, you will be rewarded with panoramic views. Enjoy the sights of the mountainous landscape for as far as the eye can see. If you crave to lengthen your adventure, navigate the mountain saddle, and ascend the neighboring Republican Mountain. Explore the mountain top and bask in the impressive vista before retracing your steps along the path back to the trailhead.
