THE TOP 10 HIKES IN INDIAN PEAKS WILDERNESS AREA, COLORADO

  1. Lone Eagle Peak (15.1mi, 2047ft, 6-8h): The best hike in Indian Peaks is a rugged hike, and one of the best hikes in Colorado. You’ll walk past many waterfalls including Cascade Falls. At the end you’ll see Lone Eagle Peak towering over Mirror Lake and dominating the mountain landscape. This beautiful reflection makes it one of the most scenic views in Colorado.
  2. Arapaho Glacier Trail (13.0mi, 2792ft, 5-7h): The hike on this high alpine trail leads you to an overlook of Arapaho Glacier and one of the best views of the Continental Divide and Indian Peaks. The Trail ends at the saddle of South Arapaho Peak. It’s a tough hike though; you’ll want to bring hiking poles for this one.
  3. Lake Dorothy (7.8mi, 1949ft, 4-6h): This Indian Peaks hike has an awesome reward: Lake Dorothy. Lake Dorothy is a beautiful alpine lake at the base of Mount Neva. The stunning mountain backdrop of Mount Neva is something special.
  4. Lake Isabelle Trail (9.9mi, 1161ft, 4-6h): Being one of the best hiking trails in the Indian Peaks means a busy parking lot. However, this beautiful alpine lake with views of the Isabelle Glacier is worth the trouble. Get here early, as this hike is a popular daytrip from Boulder and Denver.
  5. Lost Lake (4.3mi, 814ft, 2-3h): Lost Lake is a great hike in Indian Peaks to bring your kids with you. This popular, family-friendly hike is a moderately easy hike that begins at the historic Hessie Townsite (an old mining town, high in the Rocky Mountains). This hike offers a lot of bang for the buck: not too much work for a lot of great sights.
  6. Pawnee Pass (11.6mi, 1736ft, 5-6.5h): This is a burly hike that can be done as either a long day-hike, or it can be stretched out into a multi-day backcountry camping trip, with access to the Continental Divide. There’s lots of elevation to be gained, so be prepared.
  7. Long Lake Trail (4.1mi, 125ft, 1.5-2.5h): Another great family hike in Indian Peaks Wilderness. This is a short and relatively easy hike with mild elevation gain. What’s even better is that it also offers amazing views around a scenic, lower alpine lake. This is a hike for all ages.
  8. Blue Lake Trail (3.7mi, 640ft, 2-3h): This awesome hike takes you through some of the best alpine meadows in Indian Peaks Wilderness. We hope you like wildflowers because in the summer this trail has them in spades. To top it off, the grand finale of this trek is the beautiful Blue Lake with Mount Toll sitting in the background.
  9. Diamond Lake Trail (6.2mi, 1184ft, 3-4.5h): This is a nice, half-day hike that takes you out to a crystal clear alpine lake with stunning mountain views. We love this Indian Peaks hike because the terrain is exciting, and Diamond Lake is remarkable. We recommend putting in the hours for this trek. It’s worth it.
  10. Rainbow Lakes Trail (3.1mi, 276ft, 1.5-2.5h): This is a nice family friendly hike that will – in a short amount of time – take you to four scenic mountain lakes. The trailhead leaves at the Rainbow Lakes Campground, so if you want to plan a trip with the kids, this is a great activity to wear off all those s’mores you ate the night before.
