The routes
Several of the great pilgrim routes can be walked to Santiago, each with its own character. The Self-Guided Camino Frances tours is the classic and busiest, running right across northern Spain from the Pyrenees through Burgos and Leon. Up from the south come the Self-Guided Portuguese Camino tours and the seaside Self-Guided Portuguese Coastal Camino tours, both crossing over from Portugal. Along the north coast runs the scenic Self-Guided Camino del Norte tours, while the short Self-Guided Camino Ingles tours starts on the Galician coast and suits a shorter trip. Climbing all the way from Seville is the long Self-Guided Via de la Plata tours, the quietest of the major routes.
Choosing your walk
The simplest choice is how far to walk. Many people do just the last hundred kilometres into Santiago, about a week on foot and the minimum for the Compostela certificate, others take a fortnight on a longer section, or a month or more to walk a route end to end. After that it comes down to taste: the Frances for company and history, the northern and Galician routes for quiet and scenery, a coastal route for the sea. Beyond Santiago you can keep walking to the ocean on the Self-Guided Finisterre Way tours, and there are quieter paths still among the Self-Guided Other Caminos tours, like the old Primitivo, the winter Invierno and the Sanabres.
What to expect
The Caminos are walked at your own pace, with route notes and a GPS track, your luggage moved ahead each day, and rooms booked in advance, so you carry only a daypack. The trails are waymarked with yellow arrows and scallop shells and are easy to follow; most days cover around 20 to 25 km on tracks, quiet lanes and the occasional stretch of road, with the hillier going on the Primitivo, the Norte and over the passes of the Frances. They end at the cathedral in Santiago, where pilgrims who have collected stamps in a passport along the last 100 km receive the Compostela.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn, roughly May to June and September to October, are the most comfortable and the most popular, with warm days and long light. July and August are hot, especially on the meseta of the Frances, and the busiest, while the northern and coastal routes stay greener and milder. Winter is quiet and wet, and best suited to the southern routes or the Winter Way, which was made for the cold months.

FAQ for Camino de Santiago Hiking Tours
Which Camino routes can I walk?
Many. The best known are the Frances, the Portuguese and its coastal version, the Camino del Norte, the short Camino Ingles and the long Via de la Plata, plus quieter routes like the Primitivo, the Invierno and the Sanabres.
How long does it take to walk?
It depends on the route and how much of it you walk. The last 100 km into Santiago takes about a week on foot; a longer section runs to a fortnight; and walking a whole route, like the Frances end to end, takes four to five weeks.
How do I earn the Compostela?
Walk at least the last 100 km into Santiago and collect stamps in a pilgrim passport, two a day over the final stretch, then present it at the Pilgrim’s Office. Most of the week-long tours here start exactly 100 km out for this reason.
Which Camino is best for a first walk?
The last 100 km of the Frances from Sarria is the usual first Camino: well-marked, sociable and full of services. For something quieter, the Camino Ingles or a Portuguese route make gentle introductions.
How hard is the walking?
Most of it is moderate, around 20 to 25 km a day on good paths, with no technical ground. The gentler going is on the last-100 km routes and the Portuguese; the Primitivo, the Norte and the mountain stages of the Frances are more demanding.
Are the tours guided or self-guided?
All self-guided: you walk at your own pace, with route notes and a GPS track, luggage transfers and booked accommodation, and support on call if you need it.
When is the best time to walk?
Late spring and early autumn are ideal. Summer is hot and busy, particularly on the Frances, and winter suits the southern routes and the Winter Way.
Where do pilgrims sleep and eat?
These tours use booked guesthouses and small hotels rather than the pilgrim hostels, with luggage moved on each day. Evenings bring hearty regional cooking and the three-course pilgrim menu found all along the way.
