Kit describes himself as an 'adventurous spirit' and recently shared his experience of trekking in Greece.
Hello, fellow adventurous spirits! I’m Kit Soder, a 54-year-old traveller and storyteller who recently joined a small group of friends on a self-guided, four-day trek to the summit of Mount Olympus, and let me tell you - it was nothing short of life-affirming. I’m here to share that deeply moving journey, so you can see how even a short getaway can still whisk you into mythic landscapes and personal triumph.
Why this short trek still felt epic
Though our Greek hiking tour was only four days long, every moment pulsed with meaning, from the rustic streets of Litochoro to the thin-air views from the summit. Unlike week-long expeditions, this adventure didn’t require endless planning or time away. Instead, it delivered intensity, connection, and clarity in a concentrated, soulful package. It was proof that meaningful adventure doesn’t have to mean long, but it does need heart.

Day-by-day highlights from my Mt.Olympus experience
Day 1 – Hello, Litochoro
We arrived in this charming foothill town rich in tradition - folk music spilling from taverns, ancient stone buildings, and the scent of olive groves in the air. We settled into a cozy guesthouse, shared laughter over dinner, and felt anticipation tingle in our bones.
Day 2 – Into the wild
A taxi delivered us to the trailhead at Prionia, and from there, it was just us, the forest, and the E4 trail winding through gorge and stream, along wooden bridges, ever upward. The climb was rigorous (over 1,800 meters of ascent!) but each breath stung with exhilaration. Emerging above the clouds, we reached the Skolio summit at about 2,911 meters, and the world felt both immense and intimate. That night, nestled in a mountain hut, we fell asleep to the rhythm of the wind and celebration in our hearts.
Day 3 – A descent steeped in myth
Waking to cold air and high peaks, we hiked the Plateau of the Muses - a foggy expanse so ethereal, we half expected the deities to appear. The descent to Gortsia unfolded across alpine meadows and ridges, ending with a taxi ride back to Litochoro and a well-earned local feast.
Day 4 – Carrying Olympus with us
After breakfast in the guesthouse, the journey ended - not the feelings of awe or friendship. We departed richer than we arrived, carrying Olympus in our hearts.
What made this trek so powerful
- Big moments, compacted time - Four days packed with emotion, elevation, laughter, effort, and reward.
- Myth woven into every step - Olympus is drenched in legend. Hiking through its gorges, forests, and summits, we felt like we were walking among gods.
- Together, yet on our own path - The self-guided nature meant we set the pace, yet bonding over shared challenge felt intimate and freeing.
- Comfort in simplicity - No tents, no heavy backpacks. Guesthouses and mountain huts offered rest and authenticity.

Why this matters: adventures don’t require weeks
Culture tells us adventure must take forever. I’m here to say: nope. All you need is a clear schedule, a willing heart, and a short path into wonder. In just four days, I:
- Climbed to Greece’s highest trek-accessible altitude
- Slept under stars and in soothing huts
- Ate meals that tasted like victory
- Bonded with women who felt like sisters by sunrise
All without exhausting my vacation or my spirit.

Final thoughts from Kit
If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to climb… but I don’t have time,” please let our journey stand as proof. Adventure can be short and epic at once. It can stir your soul and sharpen your gratitude. It can turn an ordinary season into a shared legend.
Here’s to your next unforgettable moment. May it be just around the bend.
