Route Description for Mount Maude via Phelps Creek Trail
Mount Maude is a formidable objective and the hike to the top via Phelps Creek Trail will challenge you technically and physically. That said, the views are sublime and it’s a very fun adventure. Come prepared for a long trail with scrambling required. Poles are recommended.
Beginning from the Phelps Creek Trailhead, enjoy a more relaxed 4.8 km start. Once you turn up Leroy Creek (staying right at the junction), you’ll begin to quickly and aggressively gain elevation. Enjoy the views in the basin as you continue to the Freezer Pass ridge. The trail can also become difficult to find here, so refer to your GPS track if needed. Remember that you need to drop down into the basin before ascending instead of going right up the ridge. The trail will become precarious if you remain too high on the ridge.
The final push up Mount Maude is a real slog and not for the faint of heart. Complete your final scramble and soak up the views. When you’re ready, retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
