Itinerary for Central Peru Campervan Road Trip
The Adventure Begins in Lima
Meet at 9 am this morning at the rental center where you’ll be briefed by the local team and get to know your RV and supplies. Then it’s time to hit the open road as you set out North on the Panamericanan Highway.
Drive around 2 hours and you will reach the detour to Caral, the oldest civilization of America! Set out on the 22 km trail to discover this 5,000 years old site and second oldest civilization in the world after Mesopotamia!
Following your exploration of this ancient site, it’s time to hit the road to reach your first overnight destination, Hatun Machay.
Explore the Stone Forest & Drive to Caraz
Pack up your roof top tent this morning, then set out to explore the stone firest of Hatun Machay (there is a fee to be paid to the locals here).
Then, it’s time to set out on the 150 km drive to Caraz. On the way, you can stop in Huaraz and can also check out the Yungay Cementery located on the outskirts of the Huascaran 4 Snow Peak who’s summit is the highest point in Peru (6,768 masl)!
Day of Dazzling Lakes
Rise this morning ready to adventure, as you set out for Paron Lake. You’ll enjoy endless views of valleys, snow capped peaks and lagoons today as you continue towards Llanganuco lakes. You can choose to stay again in Caraz or continue to the campground located very close to the start point of the Lake 69 hike. Tomorrow you can do a big hike, it takes 3 hours to get to the lagoon. A local contact is available to guide you on the hike tomorrow if you’d like.
Lake 69 Hike And Onwards to Chacas
Today you can opt to hike the Lake 69 route which is well worth the effort! Then you’ll set out for Chacas which you can reach via Carhuaz. Tonight you can stay at Hotel Plaza in Chacas or Jamin Hostel in San Luis, as there are suitable campsites.
Ancient Temples on the way to Chavin de Huantar
En route to Chavin de Huantar today, you can visit the Chavin de Huantar Archaeological Complex and Site Museum. Here, discover the ‘Lanzón’ or Monolithic Sandeel, a stunning 5 meter tall carved stone Chavín deity. 3,000 years ago a culture in this remote area was responsible for the creation of these fascinating relics, and their history is yours to discover during this experience.
Tonight, you have the choice of camping in La Aurora or a hostel stay in Huallanca. You can also continue to La Union if you prefer a hotel.
La Union to Huánuco
Wake up today and drive to Huanuco as you set out headed East, passing by the Huanuco Pampa Inca archaeological site from the 1,490 ad. Learn all about Inca Culture, the main empire that governed in this area and their amazing buildings with perfectly fitted stones.
Then, continue to Kotosh archaeological site which you’ll spot before reaching Huanuco. Tonight you can stay at La Casa Hacienda Pucuchinche.
Tingo Maria National Park and Las Lechuzas Cave
Hit the road this morning as you drive towards the Tingo Maria National Park. Immerse yourself in nature here and explore the fascinating the Las Lechuzas cave. Then it’s time to head to a local campsite to retire for the evening.
Drive to the Amazon Rainforest
A scenic drive awaits you today as you head down to the Amazon rainforest, finishing in Honoria, the gateway to the Boiling River of Mayantuyacu. It’s a long road today, so it’s a good idea to finish in Honoria and stay in Hotel Fiori tonight.
Explore the Shanay Timpishka (Boiling River)
Wake up and to vthe Shanay Timpishka (boiling river) today! To do this, you’ll need to head to the Mayantuyacu Center, first taking a boat in Honoria town port, then a one hour walk.
Following this incredible adventure, you’ll head to your final destination of this road trop – Pucallpa.
Optional Visit to Yarinacocha Lagoon and Return RV
Today if time permits, head to the Yarinacocha Lagoon for one last adventure. Following this, you’ll meet at the agreed upon spot in Pucallpa to return the campervan and bid your journey farewell!
