Planning your trip to Southern England in 2026
Where to go in Southern England
Southern England packs a lot of variety into a compact corner of the country. Inland, the Cotswolds offer gentle walking and cycling between honey-stone villages. To the southwest, the long-distance South West Coast Path follows the cliffs of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, while the Jurassic Coast adds a World Heritage shoreline in Dorset. Closer to London, the Thames Path and the Isle of Wight give shorter, gentler trips. All of it is part of the wider self-guided tours across England.
The Cotswolds
The Cotswolds are the gentle heart of Southern England: a band of low limestone hills running northeast from Bath, dotted with the honey-coloured villages the region is known for, among them Chipping Campden, Broadway and Painswick. The walking is easy to moderate, much of it along the 102-mile Cotswold Way National Trail, which follows the escarpment the length of the region to Bath. It rides just as well, with quiet lanes linking the villages, market towns and country pubs.
Cornwall and the South West Coast Path
The South West Coast Path traces 630 miles of coastline around the southwest peninsula, one of England’s best-known National Trails. The trips here take it on section by section, through Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. Cornwall is the dramatic far end: the Lizard Peninsula at the mainland’s most southerly point, hidden coves and fishing harbours, and a long string of beaches. Expect rugged, often strenuous walking, with cliffs that climb and drop all day, rewarded by some of the finest coastal scenery in the country. Cornwall rides well too, on lanes that wind between its coasts.
The Jurassic Coast
East along the coast, the Jurassic Coast runs for about 95 miles through Dorset and East Devon, England’s only natural World Heritage Site. Its cliffs read like a timeline of geological history, and landmarks such as Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove draw walkers and fossil-hunters alike. The walking ranges from gentle headlands to steep, rewarding coast-path days above the sea.
The Thames Path and the Isle of Wight
For something gentler and easy to reach from London, the Thames Path follows the river through riverside towns, with one popular stretch running from Henley-on-Thames to Windsor past meadows, locks and storybook villages. Offshore, the Isle of Wight makes a relaxed short break, with almost half the island designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and quiet roads that suit easy cycling.
Walking and cycling in Southern England
These are self-guided trips: your accommodation, route notes, maps and luggage transfers are arranged in advance, and you walk or ride at your own pace, with no group and no fixed daily start. Walkers get onto the cliff paths, river trails and village footpaths, while cyclists cover more ground on quiet lanes, linking the same villages and coastlines. The two sides split into self-guided walking tours in Southern England and self-guided cycling tours in Southern England.
What to expect on a self-guided trip
Days are yours to set: you follow detailed route notes, maps and, on many trips, GPX files, while your luggage is moved ahead to the next stop. Nights are spent in guesthouses, small hotels, country inns and bed and breakfasts, usually with a pub dinner and a cooked breakfast to set you up for the day. Difficulty ranges widely, from easy Cotswold village walks that suit most people to hard, multi-day stretches of coast path with serious daily ascent, so there is a trip to match most levels of fitness and experience.
