    Hikes in Arizona

    State in United States

Arizona is a famous sun destination, and a great location for a holiday between autumn and spring. Of course, you’ll find the world famous Grand Canyon in Arizona, but that’s not all. While the state is well known for golfing and pools, there are also a lot of outdoor activities for tourists who want to explore the incredible landscapes Arizona has to offer.

Most tourists go to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon. This incredible National Park amazes visitors, and exploring the Grand Canyon on foot or horse is the best way to see this natural wonder. Equally beautiful is the stunning Sedona area, perfect in spring and autumn, with stunning natural features and great towns to explore.

We also love just hanging out in Phoenix. The town of Scottsdale is a particular favourite, with nice hotels and stunning views from the many patios, which are ideal places to enjoy a meal outdoors and the sunset over the beautiful mountains.

      Bear Mountain Trail

      Hard
      7.9 km
      617 m
      3-4.5h

Bear Mountain has a great view of the Sedona area, with sightlines that go from Fay Canyon all the way across the city. The otherworldly sandstone formations and blazing red earth are visible in all their glory from atop this impressive mountain. You’ll actually want to turn back and see the views as you climb this route, partially because of how strenuous the trail is and partially because the views en route are better than those at the summit.

This hike is hard, so you’ll want to come prepared with sturdy footwear, poles, and some gusto. You’ll need to climb a few very steep rocky sections, making this route less suitable for children or beginners. Additionally, this trail sees heavy traffic, so try to come early in the morning or in the middle of the week.

Since this trail offers no shade, you’ll want to make sure you take adequate steps to protect yourself from the heat. Bring lots of water, wear a hat and sunscreen, and don’t try this hike during a hot summer afternoon.

      0.5-1h

Bell Rock is one of Sedona’s most recognizable rock formations, and the hike around it is a great trek that sees plenty of visitors. This guide details the loop trail around Bell Rock, so it’s a good pick if you want a bit of a longer hike than the short, straightforward Bell Rock Trail and want to see the rock from all angles. This hike is a bit longer than the out and back version, but it’s still considered easy and family-friendly. We love this route at sunset.

This loop trail doesn’t include a climb up or part of the way up Bell Rock, but that can be easily added if you want to do so. Note that climbing even partway up Bell Rock requires some hands-on action in a narrow part of the trail. It’s not the best fit for very small children or those with mobility challenges. Without any additions or extensions, this loop stays on flat ground. Note that this route gets busy, so arrive early if you can.

The Seven Sacred Pools in Sedona are a set of trickling blue pools that flow into one another as they fall over layers of ochre rock. The pools like between the Oak Creek Mountains and Sedona’s desert, providing a water source for wildlife. Deep green juniper trees frame the site, reminding you just how much the landscape can change the closer you are to water.

While the pools are most often accessed using Soldier Pass Trail, you can take Cibola Pass Trail for a bit of a quieter trip with easier parking.

You’ll also be able to see the Devil’s Kitchen sinkhole on this hike, and you can also opt to extend your trip to the Soldier Pass Cave if you want to explore further. Note that the road to this trailhead is a bit rough, so drive with plenty of caution if you’re in a low-clearance vehicle.

Doe Mountain has an awesome view of the surrounding landscape, including Bear Mountain, Lost Mountain, Mescal Mountain, and Maroon Mountain to the north and Sedona to the southeast. It’s a lot of bang for your buck considering the hike is one 2.4 kmlong. While the trail is fairly easy in terms of elevation gain, there is a stretch where you’ll be on a steep, rocky path with a bit of scrambling required. The path isn’t well defined and you’ll need to pick your way over the rocks.

Small children may not be able to get through this hike, and those who are scared of heights may prefer a different trail.
